Like Interviewing a CEO!

The book escorts you through different product development stages, focusing on Prototyping and Mass Manufacturing, from a high-level. What I like about the book is, instead of overwhelming you with plethora of information and facts, she cuts to chase and provides her own opinions on what should be done in a given development phase. If you ever felt that other books keep boasting about philosophical jargon, pick this one up for step-by-step advice.

Also, it incorporates a lot of material that will keep you covered for some extended period of time. So you may focus on developing, not reading another book...

As a first time hardware entrepreneur working through the process of taking a prototype to mass production, I found Elaine's book invaluable because it provided a concrete roadmap for success, breaking down the key milestones and checkpoints that we should be hitting over the course of product development. Reading this book has enabled our whole team to move faster by helping us understand the right time to connect with manufacturers and giving us a framework to reduce the manufacturing uncertainty by focusing our internal development on the most critical components.

A Perfect Starting Point for OO

This is one of my top tech books, and I've passed along / recommended it more than once. Keep in mind that title: "Learning". This will not carry you end-to-end through C#, nor will it be the all-encompassing reference for the C# programmer who wants to keep up to speed. Instead, the audience is the new programmer, or the procedural programmer new to OO. When I think back to my first introduction to OO (a Java 1.0 boot-camp-styled course that made my brain spin in its casing), I wish I'd had this book: it's nicely paced, it begins at the beginning, and it gets you on your feet in regards to knowing how to program in the language.

Note that this review is for this edition of the book, but newer editions have since been released. I still recommend the book, and its approach, to anyone new to OO in general or C# in particular. Get started here, then dig deeper with the Bible-sized tomes if you need.

Author support is amazing!

I cruised through the first seven chapters, but I got bogged down in the eighth. So I went to the author's Delphi forum and posted a couple of questions. Received four answers promptly, two by JL himself. And he even apologized (!) for being less than perfect.
Yeah, the book is intelligent, well organized, entertaining, blah blah...but who cares? With this kind of support from the author, you are just about guaranteed success.

Great book to help friends, family, and children understand Aspergers

I gave this book five stars, only because I could not give it more.I have never written a book review before, but after much thought I felt compelled to do so for this book.

The genius of the book is that woven into a wonderful story and captivating artwork is a transcending message about Asperger's Syndrome. As a parent of an Asperger's child I have found this message helpful in explaining my son's unique behaviors to his teachers and classmates, friends, and family. What is most wonderful about the book is that is does not treat the Asperger's child as an individual with a contagious disorder, but simply a child with some differences from the norm and a differing perspective. Sam triumphs in demonstrating that a child with mild Asperger's can succeed if those around the child afford some latitude for the child's actions and understanding that simple things can be troubling and hindering.

I wish this was required reading for all. The promotion of understanding sure would make life easier for these kids.

Amazing Book for Teaching!!

After reading through several books that focused on various disabilities, I chose Understanding Sam and Asperger Syndrome as my favorite children's book about a disability. Asperger Syndrome is a disability that is part of the Autism spectrum. The story opens by describing a young boy, Sam, who has an infectious laugh, loves to play music on his cello, and lives more comfortably with routines. At school, the other students get annoyed by Sam's constant humming and tease him by taking away pieces of his puzzle so he can't finish it. Sam's parents begin to notice how Sam is different from other children his age and take him to the doctor. The doctor explains to Sam and his parents that he has Asperger Syndrome, which is a form of autism. As a team, Sam's parents, sister, teacher, and peers work together to understand Sam. At the end, Sam performs in the school concert and is fully accepted and supported by everyone. This book would be great to read to a class of young students because it explains how children with Asperger syndrome need extra support yet are very similar to everyone else. The book has great, colorful pictures and shows how students with differences such as Asperger's should be included in activities just like other students. If I knew that I was going to have a student with this disability, I would read this book to my class and openly discuss how being different isn't always easy, what things we could do to be sure that a student like Sam would feel welcomed in the class, and how to provide him with support if he becomes frustrated or upset. Especially helpful, in the back of the book is a list of 10 tips for interacting with a child with this disability which I would also go over with my class and remind them that supportive friends are the best friends.

Not only is Understanding Sam a well told story that captures attention by bringing a simplistic, yet effective and realistic understanding of Asperberger's syndrome to all; but also boasts absolutely brilliant, colorful and emotionally heart tugging illustrations. ---truly captivating and a most useful book in terms of fostering the kind of understanding, tolerance and acceptance we want to instil in our children and society as a whole.

Connecting the Dots

Every job I've ever had has asked me to forecast the future. I've done projections for new projects, new markets, new initiatives. Forecasts beyond the next few months are usually BS.

Except in some cases when they aren't. Many people look at those who "guessed right" and either think they are extremely brilliant - or extremely lucky.

This book helps disprove both of those assumptions. This book gives clear direction for what to look for, how to analyze and review those data points, and how to string together those signals to theorize what may be coming next. Here in early 2017, we all need to be able to analyze what's on the fringe and see how it connects to make tomorrow's mainstream - sometimes only a few weeks away, and sometimes a decade.

Highly recommend the book, and looking forward to sharing it.

This book shows how technology will increasingly affect all aspects of our lives. We will need better education in all areas of human knowledge but especially in sciences, mathematics, and computer sciences. People in government will have tremendous effect on our future and my not be well prepared to make good decisions.

Very little info of value

Unfortunately, Haynes once again fails to deliver on its promises.

This manual covers 12 years worth of Chevrolet and GMC truck platforms. I could list the dozen or so models with the various sub-models, but it would take up too much room. I'll just say this: There is a night and day difference between my grandfather's old 1989 Chevy Silverado 1500 2wd long bed truck and my buddy's 1999 GMC Yukon 4x4.

And yet Haynes covers them all in about 250 pages. How is that possible? Well, by cutting corners, being incomprehensibly vague, and touching only briefly on the major subjects of interest.

I bought this manual primarily as a supplement to the diesel repair manual I bought from Haynes. I figured at least I'd be able to use this as a reference for my interior repair work and auxilory wiring system checks. Alas, I over-estimated Haynes once again. There is nothing vehicle-specific in here...and why would there be? Haynes is trying to pack 12 years worth of 12 models into 250 pages.

This manual is worthless. Use the forums dedicated to your vehicle. Search the web for supplemental websites and info. Save your money and, if you get truly serious, spend it on a GM shop manual or something similar for your vehicle. Don't buy this...it will only frustrate you.

Great Book

I've been using Haynes repair manuals since the late 80's, and this one didn't disappoint. While NOT covering every aspect of my truck (1999 Chevy C3500) because it's ALSO covering many different years and models, it's got the basics that I need to do my repairs. Anything more than that, I've got the manuals that the dealer repair shops use. I recommend this book to anybody that needs to do basic repairs and a little more, and I'll continue to get Haynes for any vehicle I get.

Almost Worthless

I bought this manual with the intention of using it to repair my 1996 Silverado. It has few items that it even addresses and even then the information is elementary. The only useful information is the vehicle specs pages and in a limited way the wiring diagrams. I plan to purchase an OEM shop manual. Unless you just want to read about your vehicle and look at a few poorly taken pictures this manual is not for you.
