This autobiography offers a glimpse into the mind of Tom Patey, a man whose contributed greatly to modern climbing. He was killed in May 1970, abseiling from a sea stack off the north coast of Scotland. He was 38. People outside the climbing world knew of him as the only man who launched himself into space during the televised climb of the Old Man of Hoy. Inside the climbing fraternity everyone knew of him. It was when studying medicine at Aberdeen University that Tom first showed his talent as an extraordinary climber and started his long series of epic first ascents. He also took part in the four-man 1956 British expedition to climb the 28,800-foot Mustagh Tower, a mountain that many people regarded as unclimbable; they conquered it - Tom, John Hartog, Ian McNaught-Davies and the legendary Manchester plumber Joe Brown.

Tom Patey, one of the best-known Scottish climbers, revolutionized winter climbing with a nubmer of first ascents and record-breaking route times in the Cairngorms, Scotland.
Chris Bonington is the acclaimed author of 15 books, including "Annapurna South Face, Everest the Hard Way, " and "Tibet's Secret Mountain". He has led and been on 19 Himalayan expeditions. He lives in England and lectures extensively on leadership throughout the world.

Great hilarious book on true mountaineering.

Tom is both a gifted climber and writer. If you like arm chair mountaineering books, and have read "the White spider" or any of the other North face of the Eiger climbing books you'll really love his take on that climb. Plus his climbers dictionary is just great. I second this opinion, buy this book!

Tom Patey not only climbed some wicked routes, but was an incredibly gifted and humorous writer, often in a self effacing manner. This is one of the best climbing books I have ever read. Three words: Buy this book!
