This book is supposed to be an "unofficial" masterbuilt smoker cookbook. Basically some guy copied and pasted things about smoking, recipes, etc and made a book out of it and is selling it under the famous masterbuilt name. The book might be more successful as a smoking meats book, using all kinds of smoking techniques, woods, and devices.
Some tips if you are just starting out from my experiences with the Masterbuilt Smoker:
1. Read the instruction manual that came with your masterbuilt electric smoker.
2. Join the Masterbuilt Facebook group "my masterbuilt electric smoker".
3. Smokingmeats.com forum and website offers a lot of tips and recipes.
4. Don't buy this book. It's a waste of money because it's not edited for grammar and spelling. The temp and times are off. No pictures of completed recipes or step by step photos. No recipes for swineapple, the fatty or other stuffed meats. While some recipes are unique, they seem incomplete or not tested where they would be in more detail. For instance with the spice cake recipe, he tells you to put it in a baking sheet but doesn't specify what size. Cooking potatoes for 1 hour at 300 (when your masterbuilt smoker doesn't go up to 300) doesn't work. It should be 275 for 1.5-2 hours in your electric smoker.
5. Buy Steven Raichlens book "Project Smoke" instead".

All the cooking times and temperatures are based on charcoal heat and not electric. I have an electric masterbuilt smoker and was looking for a cookbook for electrics. Book states it has 100 electric smoker recipes, did not find any. Very disappointed.

A must-have and timely book for WordPress developers

1. Put together an idea and outline for a book that hasn't been covered in-depth before.
2. Gather three of the most talented WordPress developers/writers and have them write the book.
3. Release the book and watch the Elves return back to Middle Earth to rejoice with men.

Professional Plugin Development, written by Ozh Richard, Justin Tadlock, and Brad Williams, is a much-needed and very timely book.

There have been several aspiring developers that have approached me saying they needed a start-from-the-basics WordPress plugin development book. And while Professional Plugin Development does teach the basics of plugin development, it quickly moves on to much more complex topics.

The book covers the topics I care most about, such as:

* WordPress Plugin Foundation and Best Practices
* WordPress Security
* WordPress Actions and Filters (aka, hooks)
* And Ajax

But the book goes beyond basic plugin development. It teaches you about plugin options, CRON for scheduling common tasks, storing data (whether it is via post types, transients, or options), the HTTP API (for retrieving remote data), users (how to set up roles and capabilities), localization (err, internationalization), and how to test plugin performance.

For a novice PHP and WordPress developer, this is a good starting point. But don't think of this book as your way to learn PHP, jQuery, or even basic WordPress (there's WordPress for Dummies for that).

This is a book written by developers for developers. And I must say that I learned a lot from this book, and I've been developing WordPress plugins and themes for almost six years.

Here are the things I learned most from this book:

* The Why. I've used a lot of the techniques from the book before, but now I have a better understanding of why the techniques should be implemented. An example is security and WordPress coding best practices.
* Rewrites and Cron. These two topics escape me (no pun intended) for some reason, but I have a much better understanding of how everything works behind the scenes.
* Security. Security can not be stressed enough, and very solid security tips are sprinkled throughout the book (and the topic even receives treatment via its own dedicated chapter).
* Multisite. I've been working with multisite for almost a year now, and it's a topic I'm still learning in-depth. The chapter gives a great explanation of terms and common pitfalls.

Last, but certainly not least, the book goes into great detail for what you should do after you've released a plugin, whether you want to release it for free in the official WordPress repo, or have it available exclusively on your own site (whether commercial or free). The book explains marketing, how to set up automatic updates (albeit a bit glossed over), and how to get the plugin on the official repo.

This is a highly recommended book, whether it be the print version, or digital.

It takes true experience to create a book this useful

The first time I went to a WordCamp presentation, the speaker said off-hand, "before I do anything, I check Justin Tadlock's site to see if he's written a tutorial." Before that day, I had never depended on anything but the Codex for support when I wrote plug-ins ... and you could tell by looking at my code.

Since then, I've become a frequent reader of Justin's blog, I've subscribed to several mailing lists for code, and I've started following quality developers - namely the authors of this book - on Twitter. It's been a slow start, but it's changed the way I look at open source and development in general.

And now comes a book written by three of the most respected developers in the WordPress community. It's well written, honest, and comes from a collective background of collaboration and been-there-done-that experience. I've been working with WordPress for more than 4 years now, and this is by far the best reference I've seen to date ... both for developers just starting with the project and for seasoned professionals who build their business on WordPress.

I've seen code written by all three of these developers, built my own systems on the shoulders of their outstanding work, and watched several others grow as developers following after their example. I can't think of any team more qualified to write about WordPress plug-in development, and I can't think of anyone else who'd do a better job.

This is an outstanding book and was definitely worth the 2-month pre-order wait to have a physical copy on my desk to mark up and turn back to. Though I'm confident that the eBook version will be just as useful for those who can't wait for overnight shipping to deliver! :-)

A must-read for WordPress developers

There aren't many great WordPress books on the market and the topics covered here are not explained in any comprehensive way in the existing online resources. The authors have managed to distill everything you could possibly need to know about plugin development into a well-organized, well-written reference book that I've been calling on a couple of times a week.

Apart from the basics of plug-in development - which it explains very effectively - there are many advanced subjects that any plug-in developer needs to understand. It delves into WordPress actions and hooks, security, best practices, Ajax, the HTTP API, regionalization and how to test for performance.

The book doesn't pretend to teach you PHP and WordPress - you need to be well versed in both to get the most from the material. But if you want to develop plug-ins for either the community or commercial audience, everything you need to know is in here. As an aside, the authors are very well respected WordPress coders so you really couldn't hope to learn from better teachers.

The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New York monastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising dogs accentuates the essential human-canine bond, whereby owners must learn to understand a dog's instincts, needs, and behavior. Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the key to successfully training him. They first published this philosophy in their 1978 classic guide How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend. Now the monks concentrate on the first three months of a puppy's life in The Art of Raising a Puppy.

The book observes a litter of monastery puppies from birth to 12 weeks. Tender photographs and dialogue reflect these precious first few weeks of life. The monks, who have bred and trained dogs and counseled owners for 20 years, believe that most puppies, if treated "carefully and intelligently," will grow into happy, adult companions. In their guide to raising puppies, they discuss growth phases, critical periods, and feral instincts. Emphasis is on preventing problems before they arise. The monks show how to recognize various temperaments, and how to care for and train the puppies properly. Libraries that already have Carol Benjamin's Mother Knows Best (Howell, 1989) or Charlotte Schwartz's The Howell Book of Puppy Raising (Howell, 1987) could forgo this. However, the popularity of the monks' first book, How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend (LJ 9/15/78), may create a demand for their second.

It is clear the Monks of New Skete sincerely mean well, however their lack of knowledge and training skills is evident in their books. The Monks of New Skete share the same goal as other trainers, in that they want to see dogs that are well-behaved and included into their family’s lives.

Many years ago I read the 1991 book “The Art Of Raising A Puppy” from the Monks of New Skete and at that time thought it was a great book. I recently purchased the “Completely Revised And Updated” version of “The Art Of Raising A Puppy” in hopes that I would find a new and improved version of the 1991 book. Sadly that is not the case. Since reading the first book I have become a professional trainer and I continued to learn from exceptional individuals and now I could never recommend their books or their training.

A few of the glaring problems with the books are:
They state rightly that it is normal and “to expect some whining this first night” from your new puppy when you go to bed. They recommend you “reach down and quiet him without a fuss….Do this calmly, soothing him at first. If the whining persists, a gentle scruff shake along with a low 'No, go to sleep' may be necessary.” What! A scruff shake and a verbal correction for a puppy spending the first night away from his mother and littermates? And this is supposed to be coming from their new best friend?

For housetraining the procedure in the book regarding covering the whole floor in newspaper will create more challenges then necessary in housetraining your puppy.

The 2011 “Completely Revised And Updated” edition on page 64 is another example of what you want to avoid when feeding puppies and the way not to handle these situations. A better course of action would be for the Monks to structure things so as to prevent unnecessary possessiveness and aggression in the puppies during this extremely sensitive time, when the effects of these experiences are permanent. The concern with The Monks of New Skete book continues in the chapter “Discipline and Common Puppy Problems”. The advice on forcefully dealing with the five-month-old male German shepherd that growls at guests is another huge issue. Sadly, following their guidance can actually make the problem much worst.

The book goes on to recommend training collars “Once your puppy has been on a flat-buckle collar or a martingale collar for one to two months”. There is no reason for this. “Training collars” are completely unnecessary for a puppy or an adult dog. They recommend a “snap-around nylon training collar” (basically a nylon choke collar) and a modified prong collar. (plastic prong collar). On page 250 (2011 edition) they state they have begun introducing remote collars (shock collars) in their adult training program. Unfortunately due to a lack of knowledge and training skills the Monks have resorted to “training tools”. In reality none of these “tools” are needed to train a dog, even a challenging dog to an advanced level.

The other glaring issue in the book is the over emphasis on dominance and alpha. The Monks approach is to show the dog who is boss and act harshly “when necessary”. Dogs, like humans, would much rather follow a leader than a boss. The Monks could learn “How to Be Your Dog’s Best Friend” from knowledgeable trainers like Suzanne Clothier and John Rogerson, to name just two. Dominance is exercising the most influence or control in the context of a relationship between individuals. You don’t need to establish an authoritarian relationship to be considered the dominant one in the relationship; you need to be a leader. Styles of leadership are not limited to just two choices; permissive or harsh. Leadership doesn't require you to turn into a food container and act like a PEZ dispenser, nor do you need a “behavior science” degree. What is required is that you understand dogs and the art of dog training. Then simply act like a leader not an adversary and the dogs will look like partners not prisoners. If you get your part right the dogs will be well-behaved, under control and more often cooperating rather than submitting.

Many dogs with training or behavior problems that are mistaken for “dominant” are just lacking self-control and discipline, and were never taught manners nor properly trained. What many people have mistaken for “dominance” was an independent, confident, assertive dog that would not be referred to as biddable. There are dogs with strong personalities that require a committed leader to maintain control, but the Monks training tools and harsh methods are unnecessary. Even the more challenging dogs can be trained without the harsh treatment and all the “training collar” tools.

A far superior book on every level is “The Dog Vinci Code” by John Rogerson. John Rogerson is a world renowned dog trainer and behaviorist who has been training dogs for over 40-years. For a better approach to the housetraining and feeding issues noted above read “The Dog Vinci Code - Chapter 4 “Early Behavioural Development”. With regards to the advice in the “Discipline and Common Puppy Problems” on forcefully dealing with the five-month-old male German shepherd that growls at guests, start with chapter 42, page 247 “Understanding Aggression” and then move to chapter 44, page 260 “Fear and Aggression” for a better approach to dealing with such behavior. For more insight on dealing with a dog that growls, read page 215 in “Bones Would Rain From The Sky” by Suzanne Clothier.

If you are still curious and are open to increasing your knowledge about living with and training dogs, get anything written by Suzanne Clothier. Read her book “Bones Would Rain From The Sky” chapter 17 if you want to understand how and when to apply compulsion or coercion if/when persuasion has reached its limits. Suzanne Clothier has been working with animals professionally since 1977, with a deep background of experience that includes obedience, agility, puppy testing, breeding, Search and Rescue, conformation, instructing, kennel management and canine midwifery. Suzanne is also a German Shepherd breeder and her 8 generations of Shepherds have been successful in obedience, agility, SAR, tracking, herding and therapy work.

It’s my sincere hope that the Monks of New Skete will come to a new way of seeing and seek out some of the exceptional trainers whose methods result in well-trained dogs, and whose approach is based on building a strong relationship and being your dog’s best friend. I’m certain the dogs would appreciate it.

Even though I'll use other methods...

There is old school choke-chain training and the new focus on rewards only. This book is somewhat inbetween but definately more toward the reward system. The old-school element here is mostly using mild, very brief tugs on the collar, along with a mild "no" to correct behavior. But there is none of the punishment of the total old-school methods. Although it offers suggestions on the use of food rewards, there is more reliance on rewards of affection. These monks mostly raise German Shepards, I suspect if the system works with them it will suffice for other breeds.
The first third of the book describes the life of the puppy until you would pick him up at eight weeks. Initially I had wanted to get on with what to do when I first brought a pup home. But this section turned out to be very informative, offering a background on developmental stages that really helps understand where your puppy "is coming from".
The section on formal training is outstanding in its clarity. Other books I've read feel like I'll need them at my side as I execute the methods. With this book, it all made perfect methodogical sense in a sequential, memorable order.
I've now read 10 training books. I will be using the more modern rewards/marking techniques offered in other books. But I still give this 5 stars, the insight into canine development alone makes it a rewarding read. I don't discount the methods, perhaps if I were getting a Rotweiler or GSD I'd pay these methods more heed.

Logical puppy/dog training guide withOUT using treats!

I have always used treats to train our previous dogs, and with some exceptions (leash training/heel command in particular) it worked okay, but a dog trainer/friend suggested this book for our new puppy (it's been 20 years since we had a puppy) and I am a convert! It uses DOG logic, instead of applying human thinking to training. How does a dog think and feel? This book explains WHY you are doing what you are doing - e.g. crate training is good because it reminds them of being in a cave. The author compares it to how your dog likes to sleep under your desk, bed or other dark corner. Our previous dog used to crawl under our son's bed when she was afraid. Caves are comforting to them. Crates can be too. Then it gives a step by step guide on how to teach your pup to enjoy his crate.

Basically, the book shows you (the dog's owner) how to be the pack leader. Your dog should do what you want him/her to do because they respect you - not because they were bribed with treats. This was a difficult concept for me to grasp initially (having always used treats in the past).

If you have an older dog, try the Monks other book - How to Be Your Dogs Best Friend - I have this one as well, but find the Puppy book is excellent for puppy specific stuff. Start off on the right foot and read this book! Do NOT wait until your dog is six or more months old or it will just be more difficult to correct bad habits. If every dog owner read and practiced what this book preaches, there would be fewer dogs sent off to the shelter.

Mike Brooks was born in Ipswich, Suffolk in the UK and moved to Nottingham when he was eighteen to go to university. He s stayed here ever since, and now lives with his wife, two cats, two snakes, and a collection of tropical fish. "After reading this book - the word Ultimate (in the title) is an
understatement. If Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, and Tom Hopkins only
specialized in telesales, all combined would probably not be able to
provide such an abundant amount of immediately useful and practical sales
info. No matter what type of sales you are in, this book should be
bought, read once, read again, and then used over and over on each and
every sales call and interaction. The scripts here are worth their weight
in commissions, bonuses, and rewards that will be earned on account of
having used them. Ultimately, this book provides you with a proven
scripts and techniques that will make you successful. I can't recommend
it enough!"

Excellent book! Wish I had it two years ago!

First I have to say that when I saw that this book was almost $40, I was like, are you kidding? But I was desperate to get through to the decision makers (I set appointments then go close insurance products), and if I heard one more, "Will he know what this call is about?" I think I would have quit. So I ponied up the dough and got Mike's book. When it arrived I started reading it and couldn't put it down! OMG! It is packed with every come back I ever needed, and none of them sound cheesy or salesy. I couldn't wait to try them! Well, I've been using them now for almost two weeks and it's like a whole new world out there for me. I'm totally prepared for everything that used to blow me off and not only am I getting through to prospects, but when I do I actually now get the rapport I need and get 'qualified' appointments. I'm telling you, it's amazing.

I've been spending the last few days adapting scripts and making them my own. I'm telling you, I wasn't a believer in scripts until I read this book, but now I know why I was struggling so much. I'm actually looking forward to calling in January and feel that 2011 will be my best year yet. This book rocks, and if you sell over the phone, believe me it will be the best $40 you'll ever spend on yourself. Plus you get free shipping!

I could not open it on one computer. On another computer only a few of the programs worked. It was a great disappointment to me.

Pretty foolish of me to buy used product like this

Product arrived promptly, and even had a code.

But all it did was load an image of the text cover and attempt to dowmload spyware onto my system. Thank goodness my antivirus caught it.

Pretty foolish of me to buy used product like this. But at the price, I thought it worth a shot, as I think PH produces excellent science materials. Would like to chance buying a "new" copy, but now don't even trust those, as shrink-wrap is so readily accessible :-(

So now it's off to open a Castle Learning account and to search YT for chem videos. Aaah, the life of a student (or a student's mom) is never easy.... :-(

ETA: Must acknowledge that the booksellers from which I made the purchase are now trying to locate a functional set for me... Fingers crossed. Impressed by their efforts to help!!
