A great book
By Fei Yang
This book cuts the edge on Internet GIS. Although the IT world has changed a lot since the book was publised in 2003, the main frame of Internet GIS has not. And this book does not just introduce techniques, it is fascinating to see how Internet GIS works at background. It's a great book for a person with some GIS knowledge and wants to know more advanced GIS application in sharing data and services.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8 After he unwittingly releases an evil force long imprisoned in an old Irish manuscript, Pidge and his little sister, Brigit, are drawn into a series of adventures to help the good god, the Dagda, destroy this evil before it is found and used against the world by the Morrigan, Celtic tripartite goddess of battle. The Morrigan, in both hilarious and terrifying personae, is seen mostly in mod guise as a pair of motorcycle-riding hags, who set up a command post in Galway to observe and meddle with the action. (In one terrific touch, their fingerprint, suspended in air, becomes elsewhere a maze to entrap the children.) Their mean sense of humor lets them create a "watch frog" (who speaks in bog-Irish malapropisms); comb their blue and red hair with a live hedgehog; and make chess moves by sticking pins into chess pieces given temporary life. And constantly, their shape-changing, flick-tongued, slyand dominatedhounds track the children, but they may not kill unless they see their quarry run. The unfolding quest baffles and challenges the pair as it will readers, as shapes shift and dreams take on independent life. The writing is wonderful, but inventive to distraction; one can lose track of names and allusions to earlier events as episodes multiply, and some of the episodes seem superfluous. (The glossary is for traditional material only.) Large collections should have this book, by a new Irish writer, and those libraries with dedicated readers of fantasy should try it. Ruth M. Read this book!
By A Customer
I first read The Hounds Of The Morrigan in elementary school. Recently while at the library, it caught my eye again, almost like Pidge in the story. This is a wonderful novel - the characters are as alive as any people I've met, the setting is amazing, and, especially for a childrens book, the plots and subplots are intricate and complex. But fascinating - it's almost hypnotic - this is the only book I have ever seriously not been physically able to put down while reading it. Anybody looking for (I mean anybody, from 10 to much older) a really good fantasy and the quest you wished for devoutly as a child, a crash course in Irish mythology, and the kind of book will probably never come along again - read this book. It's well worth it. I wish Pat O'Shea would write another book like this - perhaps someday she will. Until then, read this one and hope. Come on, Pidge and Briget are waiting!

Sigh
By Katherine Lothlorien
This is a masterpiece.
Look, I can rave about as many books as I read (and I will) but in the end, this book is my very favourite. It took ten years to write and is, quite frankly, brilliant.
It has (almost) everything that recommends a book to me. Warm, endearing protagonists (Pidge and Brigit are two of the most delightful heroes to grace children's literature), truly threatening bad guys, humour, suspense, scary bits, happy bits, bits that make your scalp tingle, and bits that make your heart sing. It's about friendship, and love, and courage, and good versus evil. It's about ordinary people doing extraordinary things. It's ostensibly a children's story, but is strengthened by some challenging concepts. Its length, which would normally be limiting, merely prolongs the absolute delight to be found in this book. The plot is engrossing, although slow moving to start off with and references to Irish mythology lend an air of familiarity to the story.
The true strength of the book though, lies in its characters. Everyone in this book has a story. Every character is fully dimensional. You can picture Puddeneen having his life made cheerfully miserable by Miss Fancy just as strongly as you can picture Brigit growing into a vibrant, intelligent young woman and Puddeneen is a talking frog. That is how well O'Shea does her job.
I could never understand why 'His Dark Materials' etc were any more popular than this truly marvellous book. I recommend it above all others. It's beautiful.

Real magical fantasy.
By A Customer
Some books stretch the bounds of credulity with unexplained magical feats, but with this book I just didn't care; it makes no pretensions to be other than what it is - a children's fairy story, where anything can and does happen; monsters, giants, shapeshifters, witches, magic, talking animals - this book has the lot. It made me want to read it out loud to my grand-daughter, if it wasn't so long! It has that (now) outdated 'story-book' delivery to it that is somehow very appropriate to the plot and characters; short, descriptive sentences without waffle or padding convey the gist of the story using exactly the right words and phraseology - no wading through paragraphs of tortuous description. Brigit steals the show with her feisty 'I can do anything and I'm not afraid of YOU' attitude and the other characterisations are so good, you can 'see' each one in your mind's eye. Ideal material for a film, but I fear that Terry Gilliam is the only one good enough to do it justice. I loved it - read it with a child's open mind and you will too - a real joy!

Michelle Obama: A Life, by Peter Slevin

This is the inspiring story of a modern American icon, the first comprehensive account of the life and times of Michelle Obama. With disciplined reporting and a storyteller’s eye for revealing detail, Peter Slevin follows Michelle to the White House from her working-class childhood on Chicago’s largely segregated South Side. He illuminates her tribulations at Princeton University and Harvard Law School during the racially charged 1980s and the dilemmas she faced in Chicago while building a high-powered career, raising a family, and helping a young community organizer named Barack Obama become president of the United States.
From the lessons she learned in Chicago to the messages she shares as one of the most recognizable women in the world, the story of this First Lady is the story of America. Michelle Obama: A Life is a fresh and compelling view of a woman of unique achievement and purpose.

Introduction

In June 2010, when Michelle Obama cast her eyes across the class of graduating high school seniors from one of Washington’s most troubled black neighborhoods, she saw not only their lives, but her own. The setting was Constitution Hall, where the Daughters of the American Revolution had prevented opera singer Marian Anderson from performing in 1939 because she was black. So much had changed in seven decades, and yet much had not. Michelle spoke to the graduates about the troubles facing African American children in Anacostia, and she spoke about racism. She pointed out that the neighborhood within sight of the U.S. Capitol once was segregated and that black people had been prohibited from owning property in parts of the community. “And even after those barriers were torn down,” she said, “others emerged. Poverty. Violence. Inequality.”

Michelle drew a straight line from her struggles with hardship and self-doubt in working-class Chicago to the fractured world the Anacostia students inhabited thirty years later. She told them about being written off, about feeling rejected, about the resilience it takes for a black kid in a public school to become one of the first in her family to go to college. “Kids teasing me when I studied hard. Teachers telling me not to reach too high because my test scores weren’t good enough. Folks making it clear with what they said or didn’t say that success wasn’t meant for a little girl like me from the South Side of Chicago.” As she spoke of her parents—their sacrifices and the way they pushed her “to reach for a life they never knew”—her voice broke and tears came to her eyes. As the students applauded in support, Michelle went on, “And if Barack were here, he’d say the same thing was true for him. He’d tell you it was hard at times growing up without a father. He’d tell you that his family didn’t have a lot of money. He’d tell you he made plenty of mistakes and wasn’t always the best student.”

She knew that many of the Anacostia students faced disruptions and distractions that sometimes made it hard to show up, much less succeed. It might be family turmoil or money troubles or needy relatives or children of their own. Or maybe the lack of a mentor, a quiet place to study, a lucky break. “Maybe you feel like no one has your back, like you’ve been let down by people so many times that you’ve stopped believing in yourself. Maybe you feel like your destiny was written the day you were born and you ought to just rein in your hopes and scale back your dreams. But if any of you are thinking that way, I’m here to tell you: Stop it.”

There were no cheap lines in Michelle’s speech that day, seventeen months after she arrived in the White House as the unlikeliest first lady in modern history. In a voice entirely her own, she reached deep into a lifetime of thinking about race, politics, and power to deliver a message about inequity and perseverance, challenge and uplift. These were the themes and experiences that animated her and set her apart. No one who looked like Michelle Obama had ever occupied the White House. No one who acted quite like her, either. She ran obstacle courses, she danced the Dougie, she hula-hooped on the White House lawn. She opened the executive mansion to fresh faces and voices and took her show on the road. She did sitcoms and talk shows and participated in cyber showcases and social media almost as soon as they were invented. Cameras and microphones tracked her every move. Maddening though the attention could be, she tried to make it useful. Amid a characteristic media fuss about a new hairstyle, she said of first ladies, “We take our bangs and we stand in front of important things that the world needs to see. And eventually, people stop looking at the bangs and they start looking at what we’re standing in front of.”

Michelle’s projects and messages reflected a hard-won determination to help the working class and the disadvantaged, to unstack the deck. She was more urban and more mindful of inequality than any first lady since Eleanor Roosevelt. She was also more steadily, if subtly, political. Not political in ways measured by elections or ephemeral Beltway chatter, although she made clear her convictions from many a campaign stage. Rather, political as defined by spoken beliefs about how the world should work and purposeful projects calculated to bend the curve. Her efforts unfolded in realms that had barely existed for African Americans a generation earlier, a fact that informed and complicated her work. “We live in a nation where I am not supposed to be here,” she once said.

Michelle’s prospects as first lady delighted her supporters and helped get Barack elected, but her story and its underpinnings remained unfamiliar to many white Americans in a country where black Americans often felt relegated to a parallel universe. “As we’ve all said in the black community, we don’t see all of who we are in the media. We see snip- pets of our community and distortions of our community,” Michelle said. “So the world has this perspective that somehow Barack and Michelle Obama are different, that we’re unique. And we’re not. You just haven’t seen us before.” She belonged to a generation that came of age after the civil rights movement. It was fashionable in some circles for people to declare that they no longer saw race, but translation would be required. As her friend Verna Williams put it, “So many people have no idea about what black people are like. They feel they know us when they really don’t.” Lambasted early as “Mrs. Grievance” and “Barack’s Bitter Half,” Michelle knew the burden of making herself understood. One of her favorite descriptions of her Washington life came from a California college student who described the role of first lady as “the balance between politics and sanity.”

During her years in the spotlight, Michelle became a point of reference and contention. She built and nurtured her popularity and emerged as one of the most recognizable women in the world. “You do not want to underestimate her, ever,” said Trooper Sanders, a White House aide. Indeed, Michelle seemed to stride through life, full of confidence and direction. Comfortable in her own skin, friends always said. Authentic. But when asked what she would say to her younger self, as an interviewer flashed her high school yearbook photo onto a giant screen, Michelle paused to consider. “I think that girl was always afraid. I was thinking ‘Maybe I’m not smart enough. Maybe I’m not bright enough. Maybe there are kids that are working harder than me.’ I was always worrying about disappointing someone or failing.”

At Constitution Hall, addressing 158 Anacostia seniors dressed in cobalt blue gowns, Michelle shared her history and her self-doubt. She offered advice and encouragement but skipped the saccharine. “You can’t just sit around,” she instructed. “Don’t expect anybody to come and hand you anything. It doesn’t work that way.” She asked them to think about the obstacles faced by Frederick Douglass, their neighborhood’s most illustrious former resident, born into slavery and self- educated in an era when it was illegal to teach slaves to read or write. His mother died when he was a boy and he never knew his father. But he made it, “persevering through thick and thin,” and spent decades fighting for equality. She also asked them to consider the current occupants of the White House. “We see ourselves in each and every one of you. We are living proof for you, that with the right support, it doesn’t matter what circumstances you were born into or how much money you have or what color your skin is. If you are committed to doing what it takes, anything is possible. It’s up to you.”

A lively account of a remarkable person
By N. B. Kennedy
Peter Slevin's biography of First Lady Michelle Obama draws you in from the very first page. He begins with her own words, spoken at the graduation ceremony at a high school in a troubled black neighborhood. By doing so, he sets the stage for Mrs. Obama's life story, the daughter of working class parents who rose to prominence despite the overwhelming odds against her.

The story is delightfully told. Mr. Slevin enlivens the narrative not only with Michelle Obama's words but of scores of people whose lives have intersected with hers. And the quotes are entertaining! One woman who says she would have predicted that Michelle would become president rather than her husband, uses a moniker you might hear on the streets instead of in the halls of power (bad- you-can-guess).

After opening with the First Lady's words, the author backtracks to her family and childhood upbringing. Again, he casts his net wide as an interviewer, finding people who knew her parents, people who went to school with Michelle, people who have worked with her. He paints a picture of the times, and what it was -- and is -- like to be black in both her parents' time and her own.

The biography is, thankfully, not a standard-issue work of hagiography. The author doesn't shy way from the First Lady's missteps, like the time she wore designer sneakers to work in a soup kitchen. He also repeats unflattering, and downright nasty, comments from both Internet trolls and high-profile critics alike. By doing so, he draws attention to the damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't role of the First Lady.

This enjoyable read is helped along by the fact that Michelle is a colorful personality who is in touch with not only her own generation, but younger generations as well -- she who tweets, dances with Jimmy Fallon, and performs in comedy skits. I have always appreciated her efforts to bring healthier habits to the nation's families and schools, so it was good to hear more about those initiatives. Perhaps most of all, I enjoyed learning about her role as "The Closer," a nickname she earned for her adept work on her husband's presidential election campaigns.

I am a very apolitical person and do not generally seek out articles or books having anything to do with politics, but even with the unavoidable political content of this biography, Mr. Slevin's book is a very enjoyable read, whichever side of the aisle you're on.

The Michelle I Always Wanted to Know
By James Hiller
Writing the biography of a first lady is a daunting business. You have a childhood to write about that may or may not be inspirational. You have the story of a presidential couple that everyone must feel they know a lot about, and the "real" couple behind the office and headlines to contend with. You also have the president, who could so overpower the First Lady as to seem diminutive and a mere echo of her husband. You also have a part of the population who, no matter what you say and/or write about a person, cannot see beyond their own political-goggles and will mercilessly attack a book no matter what the content. Peter Slevin manages to navigate successfully these potential issues in his new, fascinating book "Michelle Obama: A Life".

The story of her childhood is compelling, as she grew up on the south side of Chicago, having to contend with the pervasive racial factors that dominated the society during that time. Her parents gave her a firm grounding, insisting on education and expecting her to be a successful adult. That she fulfilled in spades.

We get to spend time with her in college, and at the start of her career. When Barack enters her life, she somehow manages to both transform and become more the woman she always was. It's a hidden testament to her character and drive, as well as her loving devotion to her husband, who was destined to be on an upward track. Even though the subsequent elections could possibly shadow the Michelle, Slevin steers the book towards her, and we get to see her both at her best and not-so-best.

In fact, Slevin writes a portrait of Michelle that is both honest and honoring. You don't feel at all that he regards her to put her on a pedestal. His intention is to tell her story as honestly as possible. The Michelle that emerges, through it all, is one of humanness, or humanity, and of considerable force and drive.

I must admit to being a Michelle Obama fan, so when this book came up for selection, I jumped at the chance. After reading it, I only admire her more. Even if you are not a fan, her story is a compelling look of one woman's journey through the heartland of America, to rise to become our First Lady. She is the epitome, mistakes and all, of our American Story.

Mrs. Obama as President?
By TLM-aka "Icart"
Much has been said about the First Lady in the press. Some complimentary; some not so complimentary. The truthfulness of the information is lacking. With all of this added together, we (meaning the population in general) end up with unnessary lies that tarnishes the reputation of the person involved and can hurt all of those surrounding him/he (Ie: children, parents, etc...). This book will help straighten out information about Mrs. Obama and give you a 'peek' into her past, present and future.

First, thrown away all of your political ambitions, goals, thoughts, and, yes, discriminations. You have to read this book as though she were your friend, mother, or neighbor. Personify her. Trust me: the book will be much more enjoyable. She has a very marked distinction over other first ladies: she's the first African-American first lady. She takes her role seriously. My opinion, and this is coming from a caucasian, 46-year old woman, is that she almost has to go WAY above and beyond to prove herself. Unlike other First Ladies she isn't afraid to show herself in public; she doesn't hide.

The book goes rather deeply into her life as far as biographies go. What was her childhood like? How did she handle growing up? Why does she make some of the decisions that she does as a first lady.

There are other books out there with Mrs. Obama as the topic. This book is different. The author has done an outstanding job telling her story. Some of it will be new information while much of it will be "old" information. It's very nonjudgmental. For the most part people will probably enjoy this book as much as I did.

The King's Private Army: Protecting the British Royal Family during the Second World War, by Andrew Stewart

Following the surrender of France in June 1940 Britain prepared to defend itself against a potential German invasion. In great secrecy a decision was taken to establish an elite bodyguard to protect the British Royal Family. Led initially by Major Jimmy Coats, a Coldstream Guards officer and celebrated winter sportsman, it was given the innocuous title of ‘The Coats Mission’, but its proposed role was perhaps the most important assigned to any unit in the British armed forces. It was intended that this group would evacuate King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and the two princesses, Margaret and her sister Elizabeth, to a place of safety away from London.

For the next two years it trained and prepared for the role in the face of what was believed to be a very real threat, and this study, drawing on previously unseen documents, interviews and archival material, provides its history and explains how the Royal Family’s protection was viewed. Beginning with the prewar shelter preparations for the Royal Households and running through the increased anxiety of the 1940 invasion threat and Blitz, the renewed danger in 1941 and then the progressive reduction in the special measures in the years that followed,The King's Private Army offers the first dedicated account of a largely unknown but potentially critical element of the defense of the United Kingdom during the Second World War.

excellent!
By C. Hill
This workbook is fantastic. I am very pleased with the logical layout and the in-depth discussions of verbs, adjectives, nouns, etc. This workbook has so much information in it, it can easily replace a textbook and be used on its own. The exercises are relevant and straightforward, but also varied.
Something I didn't know, however, before I bought it: this book is intended for intermediate users. Don't let this discourage you from purchasing it, though. As long as you know a few of the basic concepts of Italian, and understand a little about how languages work in general, you will be able to begin at the start of this workbook.
One thing it is slightly lacking in is vocabulary. There are many other books in the Practice Makes Perfect series intended to work together, so while this book will certainly help you with all the grammar you could need for an Italian I/II level understanding, you'll need to either get the other workbook(s) or find some other source of vocabulary. I have been so pleased with this workbook, however, that I intend to complete my collection of the series.
I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to study Italian on their own for fluency (not recommended for "travel"-type learning).

A big help!!
By Andrea N.
~I've spent many hours in the last few years going through 5 or 6 books in the Practice Makes Perfect series. This was my first Italian PMP book but I knew what I should expect and this book did not disappoint.

~It is well organized, and organized in a way I've come to expect (explanation of the topic presented in the chapter, followed by examples in the form of sentences or phrases usually, followed by many exercises, in this case often translating sentences, filling in charts with the conjugation of verbs into a certain verb tense, answering questions [there is more but I won't list all the types of exercises here - but that's another thing I like: the variety of exercises and the wide range of topics the chapters cover]). Answers are in the answer key in the back of the book as usual, and at the back you'll also find the Italian - English and English - Italian glossaries as well as irregular verb tables.

~To let you get a better idea of what's covered in this book, the list of chapters is as follows:

1) Nouns and titles (common nouns, gender patterns, spelling adjustments in the plural, mass nouns, proper nouns and titles)
2) More about nouns (including nouns of Greek origin, altered nouns, compound nouns)
3) Articles (the indefinite article, the definite article, and uses of both)
4) Adjectives (descriptive adjectives, invariable adjectives, comparison of adjectives)
5) Pronouns (subject and object pronouns, stressed pronouns, other pronouns)
6) More pronouns (object pronouns with compound tenses, double pronouns, attached pronouns)
7) Demonstrative (the demonstrative of nearness, the demonstrative of farness, demonstrative pronouns, indicating words and expressions)
8) Possessives (possessive adjective forms, the third-person forms, possessives with kinship nouns, possessive pronouns)
9) Partitives (partitives with count nouns, alternative forms, partitives with mass nouns, partitives in
the negative, adjectives indicating quantity)
10) Present tenses (the present indicative of regular verbs, irregular verbs, using the present subjunctive, irregular verbs in the present subjunctive, and special uses of the subjunctive)
11) Past tenses (the present perfect, irregular past participles, the past subjunctive, the past absolute, irregular verbs in the past absolute)
12) The imperfect and pluperfect tenses (the imperfect indicative, the imperfect subjunctive, the pluperfect tenses)
13) The progressive tenses (the gerund, the present progressive tenses, the imperfect progressive tenses)
14) The future and conditional tenses (the future, future perfect, the conditional [past and present], hypothetical sentences)
15) The imperative (regular forms, the negative imperative, irregular forms of the imperative)
16) Reflexive verbs (forms, compound tenses, imperative forms)
17) Prepositions and adverbs (prepositional contractions, uses of the prepositions, adverbs of manner, other kinds of adverbs, comparison of adverbs)
18) Sentences (interrogative sentences, question words, negative sentences, objects, conjunctions and relative pronouns)
19) Numbers (the cardinal numbers, telling time, the ordinal numbers, numerical expressions, dates)
20) Miscellaneous topics (the verb "piacere", the passive and the impersonal si, other)
-----

~A chapter on a verb tense will introduce the new tense but the exercises that follow review the new material as well as material on other verb tenses from previous chapters so you build on what you learned earlier.

Some specific things that I liked most or were most useful to me:

~ practicing using negative sentences (non... affatto [not at all], non... mai [never], non...nessuno [no one], non...niente, nulla [nothing], non... pi [no more, no longer], non...neanche/nemmeno/neppure [not even], non...n..n [neither...nor] and non...mica [not really, quite]

~how to use the relative pronouns correctly (che, cui, chi, ci che, quel che, quello che)

~using adverbs like: allora, anche, ancora, anzi, appena, finora, fra/tra poco, gi, invece, in fretta, insieme, lontano, male, nel frattempo oggigiorno, ormai, per caso, piuttosto, poi, presto, prima, purtroppo, quasi, sempre, solo, spesso, stamani, stasera, subito, tardi, vicino.

~suffixes in Italian and how to use them (-uccio/-uccia , -uzzo/-uzza, -one/-ona, -etto/-etta, -ino/-ina, -ello/-ella)

~basic math in Italian in the Numbers chapter (how to use +, - , , x, = )

~using piacere correctly

~using "fare" in causative constructions (example: Sara fa lavare i piatti a suo fratello = Sarah has her brother wash the dishes)

~how to say could, would, should, could have, would have, should have

~using the impersonal "si" ("Si beve quel caff solo in Italia" = One drinks that coffee only in Italy, "Si felici in Italia" = One is happy in Italy)
-----
Practice Makes Perfect did it again and published another awesome book for their series. I think any high-beginner to intermediate student of Italian should add this to their library. It's not particularly fun, but worth the several hours it takes to get through! The knowledge brought me more confidence.

Opinion from a native Italian: excellent!
By Ragnar Lodbrok
I was born in Italy and Italian is my first language. I got this book for my boyfriend who wanted to learn Italian.
Even if I have not gone through the process of learning from this book myself, I checked it carefully and among all the books I found to teach Italian this seems the very best, for various reasons:

1) It does not stop at the basic levels (many - too many - books only teach the present tense for example. That is just useless!). This books covers all the main tenses and all the important parts of Italian grammar.

2) It "categorizes" as much as possible the grammar. Now, Italian is a very complex language and unfortunately it has tons of exceptions. But I think when you teach a language to a grown up person, it is easier for them to learn if you present the grammar rules clearly, categorizing the rules. Many other books adopt a completely different approach, more similar to how children learn, that is learn through speech and figure out the grammar rules little by little.
I think this approach is much slower even if more natural. I believe the main reason is that by the time people are grown up, they have gotten used to placing pretty much everything into logical categories. So my opinion is that presenting categories is more effective for grown up people (and less effective for young children).

3) It is a balanced mix of theory and practise. It allows you to practise too, after each grammar rule is presented and explained.

I would recommend it for everyone, even for very beginners.
The only con is that it does not come with a CD or DVD so if you are not around Italians, it may be difficult to figure out the exact pronunciation of words.

Nativity board book for ages 3-5 that gets the wise men right!
By Shaun Tabatt
The Nativity Story by Juliet David is a 12-page board book retelling the traditional nativity story. Even though it's a short book, they still manage to get in the important parts of the story:

*angel visits Mary
*trip to Bethlehem
*no room at the inn
*Jesus born in a stable, laid in a manger
*angels visit shepherds
*Shepherds visit the stable
*wise men bring gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh

I was very encouraged that the final page of the book shows the wise men presenting gifts to a toddler-sized Jesus rather than a baby in a manger. That's a detail normally missed in most children's Christmas books. Hats off to Juliet David for her willingness to appropriately stray from tradition.

The book measures 5 by 5 inches, so it's slightly larger than traditional board books. The recommended age range is 3-5 years and I think that's appropriate.

My overall rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

Nice simple explanation of the Nativity Story
By danielle rikstad
Our son who is 18 months old, would sit and really study the pictures in this cute little book. This was a great book for introducing young children to the real reason for the season. I will be buying more for gifts for next year.

Good Start
By janemarie baker
Purchased this book as a quick start to learning the story of the nativity and that is just what it is. Does not go too deep and explains things on a good level. A good choice for the first couple of Christmases.

Laying a good foundation is essential for the full growth of a Christian as well as for the building up of the body of Christ. The apostle Paul exhorted young Timothy to "have an outline of sound words which words thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. Keep by the Holy Spirit which dwells in us, the good deposit entrusted" (2 Tim 1:13,14 Darby's). Such good deposit of fundamental teachings on practical Christian living forms a sure foundation on which to build. In this fifth book on Basic Lesson Series, messages are given on Marriage, Choosing a Mate, Husband and Wife, Parenthood, Friendship, Recreation, Speech, Clothing and Eating, Asceticism, and Managing Your Finances. May we learn these lessons faithfully.

Essential for singles contemplating marriage
By rossuk
This is Vol 5 of the Basic Lessons Series covering the following topics:
Marriage, Mating, Husband and Wife, Parenthood, Friendship, Recreation, Speech, Clothing and Eating, Asceticism, Managing your Finances
This is a little gem of a book because the first two chapters contain practical advice for singles contemplating marriage that is simply not found in other books offering counsel to singles. It covers topics like the gift of virginity, health, heredity, age, temperament, weaknesses, and character. Sexual attraction will tempt you into marriage but will not sustain it. Similar temperaments (eg. neatness) will reduce tension within a marriage, but similar (spiritual) weaknesses should be avoided. Recommended for those thinking about marriage and those who counsel singles.

Pathetic
By Nicole
I'm a successful college student in my fourth year and have never encountered such a poor excuse for a course textbook. The entire book could be cut down to a few chapters, there is so much filler that I can hardly stand to read it. How many times can you repeat or rephrase the same things over and over and over again? Every chapter is littered with common sense statements followed by unnecessarily long explanations of those statements that don't actually teach you anything. Then you turn the page and it's the same statements as before only creatively reworded! I'm reduced to just reading through the section titles trying to find something that I didn't read a couple pages ago. There is hardly any unique insight into entrepreneurship that a typical 3rd grader couldn't come up with. This book is satisfactory for grade school or MAYBE a high school entry level class, NOT a college course. What a waste of money.

The best of it's kind
By Deb Maubach
This is very much in textbook format but is far more engaging and interesting than any other textbook we have used. Extrememely well organized, it's broken down into 3 major sections, with each chapter just the right length for the subject matter, and lends itself easily to expansion if time is available. Seasoned heavily with real life stories and quips, even a student that doesn't like reading or school could find this course very interesting and provides a good springboard for a summer business or pt biz while still in school. I think this should become a required course for every high schooler, with so many kids not having the first clue to how to start a business, yet the majority have said they would like to have their own business at some point in their life.

In short, this is a 5 star, (6 stars if they were available), because it's very interesting reading, well organized, and clearly written. There's a variety of projects suggested thruout, as well as a wealth of resources listed in the back. I was thrilled with this course-and will probably not part with my copy when we are done! I even know of some adults that have used this as a primer to start their own business.
