Hongul is fun!

Like the first review says, if you learn the Hongul alphabet(and I assure you it is easy), then you can read the language and you can speak in no time. If you want a dictionary that says it all and is concise down to the most difficult words and thoughts, then buy this dictionary. When you have been in Korea and know what the culture is like and try like hell to fit in by using the language, you can't go wrong with this dictionary. Jin-chao!

Good for all levels

Yo! Check it!

So i have a tutor i see to study korean, and this dictionary is great in allowing me to enhance my vocab and understanding blah blah blah. I bought this in conjunction with the 4th edition Korean to English Dictionary. If your konfused (see what i did there!) then simply put the english to korean dictionary is for looking english words up in korean and vice versa for the korean to english one. NOTE: Learn 한글 or hangul! And don't be weird about it and say its difficult and crap. Do It! Since there are no romanisations except in the back, but i can't understand them since the english forms of Korean words don't allow for A) Different cultural accents, B) They don't sound anything like at in Korean.

The dictionaries are leather bound HOWEVER they do not look like the picture. The English korean dict is leather bound in red and has red as a primary highlighter for words and text throughout. . In the back of the dictionary under the title flap 부록 a.k.a the appendixs (Can't spell as of this moment) Which if you are capable of understanding gives you a COMPLEX and detailed view of how to read and write korean, through narration, sentence structure etc. It doesn't play a big part in the dictionary but still sufficent. Haven't really read mine since i have learnt most of it anyway.

The korean english version is brown leather bound, but its attention to detail isn't as high as the other. they haven't released another edition so this may be the reason why! These are big books and cost just a little over $100 for postage alone to get to Australia. Hopefully this helps you, Also buy from HAN BOOKS through amazon, its cheaper. But Han Books also have a great range of other learning material, such as bilingual classic novels in english and with korean translation, Which i intend to purchase shortly. the dictionary came via South Korea From America.

THIS IS THE BEST KOREAN DICTIONARY I'VE SEEN. IT'S WELL WORTH WHAT I PAID FOR IT. IT LISTS LOTS OF DEFINITIONS AND IS VERY THOROUGH. I ESPECIALLY LIKE IT BECAUSE OF ITS EXPLANATIONS AND EXAMPLES OF HOW TO USE THE WORD IN A SENTENCE. BY THE WAY, THERE ARE TWO VOLUMES: ENGLISH-KOREAN AND KOREAN-ENGLISH, BOTH AROUND 3,000 PAGES. YOU CAN SEE HOW THOROUGH THEY ARE. I HAVE THE ENGLISH-KOREAN ONE AND PLAN TO BUY THE OTHER ONE SOON. ANOTHER THING I LIKE IS THAT THERE ARE NO ROMANIZATIONS TO MESS WITH. IF YOU LEARN THE HANKUL ALPHABET, LEARNING TO READ IT IS EASY. GREAT DICTIONARY!

This book came pretty quick, which was great because I needed it quickly! I ordered two, one for me and one for a classmate. Both of them were in really good condition. One had minimal highlighting, but looked new and the other one looked completely brand new. It also came with the CD, both of them were still sealed, so both of us loved that. This book is so much easier to understand than the Patho book that was on our syllabus, and much lighter. The visuals are great too!

I love books like this, with good character arcs that show the evolution of the characters in response to the events of the story and their interactions with each other. And I love books like this where you can meet characters you would actually want to know in the real world, people who feel like friends. The result is a story in which I became invested in the characters and cared about what ended up happening to them. I loved seeing the interesting approaches that Megan took to solving problems going on with Kevin's siblings that had previously stymied Kevin's parents. And I liked the way the complications in the plot served to alter the relationship between Kevin and Megan, pulling them rapidly out of the superficial levels of interaction that are common at the beginnings of relationships. so if you are looking for something interesting to while away an afternoon, I highly recommend this fun and heart-warming romance.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a fun, light read with likeable characters and an interesting plot. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys romance novels, especially those ones that heavier on feelings and lighter on steaminess.

SWEET.

This was a sweet book. First couple of pages were slow-going for me, but the story picked up for me after that. And really, it's just difficult for me to understand what I feel are archaic traditions. Kevin must marry before his 25th birthday, or lose his inheritance of the family ranch. Enter Megan, sweet, moralistic, and laden with medical bills from a terrible car accident that left her financially broke. They meet through a want ad Kevin takes out, searching for a personal secretary (fake fiance) that Megan applies for & go from there. I liked all of the characters, including Kevin's somewhat difficult younger siblings. Their antics made me smile more than once. Kevin's father, (the villain) only succeeded in bringing Kevin & Megan closer together in the end. Personally, I could have used a little, shall we say, "heat". So, it's a sweet read sans heat. Either way though, I feel it was well written.

People who know how to repair cars will hate this book.

This is probably a fine book for a person who doesn't have a lot of experience with car repair, and who is looking to do some of the basics - it covers a lot of good, generic information, and it even covers some good information specific to the Jeep Liberty (2002-2007).

However, if you are a weekend mechanic who has done things like drop gas tanks, replace wheel bearings, removed a head, replaced a computer, replaced an exhaust head, or replaced an AC system ... then .. I think you are going to hate this book.

For those of us who know a lot about car repair, we buy manuals like this to give us the idiosyncrasies of a car's design ... I'm not looking for the details of a Factory Service Manual, just walk me around the car and give me the basic repair things I need to know which are UNIQUE to this model, and that I might struggle with trying to figure out. This is why I have purchased Haynes/Chilton manuals in the past.

So, what did I see when I got this book? First, it is much thinner than other Haynes I've gotten in the past ... for comparison, it is 288 pages, and my Jeep Grand Cherokee manual is 340 pages. This is somewhat of a big deal, because anyone who buys these books knows that about 100 pages of these books are car-repair-boiler-plate, generic to any car. In addition, this book should be covering two models of Jeep Liberty's: 2002-2007 (KJ Model) and 2008-2012 (KK Model), however it really only covers the specific nuances of the 2002-2007 model and I think an intern then was assigned the task of adding a few paragraphs about the KK Model so that they could market it to a wider audience.

Here are some specific things I noticed:

ELECTRICAL DIAGRAMS - The electrical diagrams look to cover only up to 2004, and what is there is actually thin - no mention of anything after 2005. The Jeep Liberty went through a total redesign for 2008. Anyone who works on car electrical systems knows that they need accurate wiring diagrams to trace problems. For comparison, my Haynes manual for ONE Jeep Grand Cherokee model has 30 pages of electrical diagrams ... this book, covering TWO models of Jeep Liberty's (KJ and KK) has just 19 pages.

SKY SLIDER - If you have a KK with a Sky Slider roof, there is nothing in this manual that even mentions it. By the way, the #1 repair problem with KK's is the Sky Slider, and yet the book doesn't mention that it even exists.

SCAN CODES - I have a current list of scan codes for a 2008 Jeep Liberty (KK model) ... this Haynes manual is missing dozens of codes that (I'm guessing) have been added to the KK model's computer.

I could probably write more, but I'm busy packing this book back up to return to Amazon. I should have trusted the other reviewers. I hate to spend $150 for a Factory Service Manual, but it looks like that may be the only course of action. :(

Not happy!

Bought this book for one reason - to change out the door lock actuator on a 2008 Jeep Liberty. Diagrams and pictures are for older versions and the little blip gives no information about how to remove the interior black panel under the door panel. Come to find out its a very lengthy procedure with removal of window motor and track. Mentioned nothing of this in the manual. Looked at few other things and they all show the older body styles. Very disappointed. They basically took their older manual and added some text. Haynes are usually great manuals and this one let me down.

it is terrible, as it is kind of an add on ...

If you have a 2009 or newer, it is terrible, as it is kind of an add on to the previous years. For example, to replace the spark plugs on an 09 or newer, there is a sleeve on the bolt holding the coil, the book states that it is a nut and the bolt comes from the bottom

Bolen, a psychiatrist and professor at the University of California Medical School, believes that women need to stand up for their rights, wants and desires and can't afford to be complainers or whiners. Explains Bolen, the author of The Millionth Circle and Goddesses in Older Women, "To be involved and engaged in life is a juicy proposition. Every juicy crone taps into a wellspring or a deep aquifer of meaning in her psyche." They are, according to Bolen, smart, compassionate, courageous and humorous. In these brief essays, she offers commonsense wisdom, calling on women to empower themselves, but also to fight against any emotional demons or problems they have. For example, in discussing women who have been abused or otherwise have some secret from their past that they're ashamed of, she writes, "At some point in their lives, most remember fearing that this truth would become known. Crones, however, also recall when and with whom they broke this taboo of silence as the beginning of feeling whole. To speak the truth is to be able to say, this is who I am." Fans of Bolen's quirky, spiritual tone will find these words comforting. However, much of the text discusses why women need to be juicy crones without offering much practical advice to improve one's life.

Bolen, a psychiatrist and professor at the University of California Medical School, believes that women need to stand up for their rights, wants and desires and can't afford to be complainers or whiners. Explains Bolen, the author of The Millionth Circle and Goddesses in Older Women, "To be involved and engaged in life is a juicy proposition. Every juicy crone taps into a wellspring or a deep aquifer of meaning in her psyche." They are, according to Bolen, smart, compassionate, courageous and humorous. In these brief essays, she offers commonsense wisdom, calling on women to empower themselves, but also to fight against any emotional demons or problems they have. For example, in discussing women who have been abused or otherwise have some secret from their past that they're ashamed of, she writes, "At some point in their lives, most remember fearing that this truth would become known. Crones, however, also recall when and with whom they broke this taboo of silence as the beginning of feeling whole. To speak the truth is to be able to say, this is who I am." Fans of Bolen's quirky, spiritual tone will find these words comforting. Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D. is a psychiatrist, Jungian analyst in private practice, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California Medical Center, and an internationally known lecturer. She is the author of many books including Crones Don?t Whine and The Millionth Circle, which was published in 1999 and spawned a whole new way for women to become activists from their local circle.

Proud to be a Crone: Now that I know what one is...

There IS a book for the phase of life and the important things that change with it for women middle aged or older. And this one does not harp on the stuff we all know: the losses. This points out the GAINS!!! And they are many. It didn't take a bit of twinkle out of my eye to see that someone had written it out since she has more juicy and wonderfully wise pieces of information than I have. It's short, hard bound, easy to read, but I still had to slow down because what is said is often simple and profound at the same time. Worth the money.

What plastic surgery can't give us---renewal and meaning

Yeah, sure the cosmetics industry and plastic surgery doctors promise maturing women with returned nubile faces, plumped lips and smoother neck, but they sure can't give us the self-acceptance and self-love that Jean, in this book, helps us discover---new meaning for our post 50s years. This book opened my eyes and my heart to what my life can be like in my maturing years and helped me look forward to that time, envision it and be excited about it. Will any glossy-covered fashion magazine will offer this kind of information to their readers if it competes with their advertisers! The book is short-ish and easy to read, but its enough to comfort me and get me excited about who I am still growing to be. My catholic upbringing nor my matriarchal family-community background in the Philippines verbalized or gave me words for the mature woman's archetype of Crone, much less the Maiden and Mother---I was mostly made familiar with the "madonna-whore" syndrome in our conservative society! To begin to discover the triple archetypes and explore the crone is a filling-in of the gaps of ignorance-learning by a society that could limit me by withholding wise, nurturing and healing teachings---but now I found this book. I have also read her other book Goddesses in Everywoman, and will continue to seek more in Jean's other books and others'. Men, btw, can benefit from reading this book and others by Jean, for even they need self-nurturing and can further blossom too and in their older years. Amazing isn't it that we can still learn new things even as we get along in our decades.

Highly Concentrated

I have found wisdom and guidance in Jean Shinolda Bolen's books since I read "Crossing to Avalon" many years ago. This book is short and pithy. Very short and very pithy. It is, in fact, concentrated...like sun-dried tomato paste or pomegranate syrup. My own desire would have been for more depth and development, but its advantage as it stands is in an almost haiku quality. I read it, one chapter a night, for several nights and reading it that way makes it a form of meditation. I suspect it would be a delightful gift from one woman in the crone years to a younger one just entering that stage of existence. If you are looking for honesty, humor and challenge, this is your book. However, if this is the first Bolen book you read, don't stop here! Pick up one of her others: "Goddesses for Older Women," "Crossing to Avalon," "Goddesses for Everywoman," and delve even deeper into her ideas.

The author of Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats (a collaboration with photographer Michael Cunningham) shifts his focus from hats to hair with this celebration of the black barber shop, "one of the nation's earliest black businesses [and]... as much a think tank as it is a comedy showcase." Over the course of 18 months, Marberry traveled around the country to document that particular "barber shop atmosphere." In Detroit, a policeman waxes poetic about a good "Razor Line" haircut; in Nashville, Oprah Winfrey's barber father, Vernon, jokes: "Somebody asked me if Oprah is my only child. I said, 'The only one so far.' " Along with the cutting quips and clipping tips, each barber and patron offers a little slice of life; topics include black history, celebrity clients, raids on unlicensed barbers, robberies, murders and the attitudes of female barbers: "It's tough for a woman in a barber shop. They say it's the black man's country club." Sixty b&w photos show the faces behind the commentary, but only some locations are identified; shop names aren't supplied, and curiously, shop exteriors aren't shown. The shops are an institution of fellowship in which black men commune, where there are unwritten social rules of tradition, where conversations can entertain and enlighten. Rare, Real Look Into Real Black-Barbershop Culture

I truly loved this book. My heart leapt in my chest when I saw it on the book shelf. As a "kitchen-barber" for more than twenty-years I was ecstatic to see the subject matter bound with photographs and ready to read.

The barbershop has for men of African decent been a respite from women, life's pressures, etiquette, censorship and sometimes reality for many years. This highly valued institution often serves the community as an outreach center, political platform, advice booth, stand-up comedy tryout club and therapist's couch. Craig Maybery has struck gold again with an enjoyable foray into the subtleties of African American culture. Like his book, "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats" Mayberry gives the reader a clear insight into the passion Blacks have for their turn at at an American tradition. It was so refreshing to see an accurate view of the black barbershop which isn't exaggerated as in the films, Barbershop I and II or butchered like the Showtime adaptation "Barbershop"; (What a MESS!)

Using 49 short biographical stories the author gives us an authentic look into the motivations, tragedies, humor and passions of the men and women who cut and style the afro-american hair shaft. The portraits of these barbers are as they presented themselves to the author. They are human: Flawed, Dedicated, Unique and Proud.

The only disappointment I had in reading this book was not being able to find present-day photos of all of the subjects interviewed. I intend to give several of these books as gifts. A beautiful tribute to the men (or women) everyone needs and uses and takes for granted and noone wants to lose. Your barber.

Black Hair

If I have heard it once, I have heard it a thousand times: black people have a special relationship with their hair. In CUTTIN' UP, Craig Marberry has put together a collection of interesting vignettes that highlight black barber shops around the nation. The stories introduce us to all kinds of people, some barbers, some patrons, some famous, and some lesser known. Each passage includes relevant photographs, usually of the narrator. The book covers a myriad of issues and topics including haircuts as a rite of passage, civil rights and the barber shop, barber shop camaraderie, funny stories and superstitions. Some stories are humorous, others are sad and all are educational.

Marberry has put together a well-organized collection that will remind readers that the ordinary things in life like going to the barber shop for a shape up can have a meaningful impact on one's life. This is a book you can pick up again and again and find at least one or two passages that will speak to you. By sharing stories told by an assortment of contributors, the author highlights our cultural diversity. The accompanying photographs make the stories even more personal and some of them are worth a second, more thoughtful look on the basis of their pure artistry alone. CUTTIN' UP didn't move emotional mountains for me, but the passages did make me smile and leave me with a sense of warmth. (RAW Rating: 3.5)

"The easy hum of men among men"

Thanks to the popularity of a recent movie, Barbershop, the public's attention has focused on the central gathering place for black men, the local barbershop. In an oral history that covers every aspect of community life, Marberry gathers stories from across the country, from "Detroit to Orlando, Brooklyn to Houston". This small gem, complete with black and white photographs, captures the wit and wisdom of barbers and their patrons, including a very select few women barbers who wield their scissors on this sacred turf.

Albert Ghee, Jr., a customer, talks about Shorty, a midget with a shoe shine stand, who worked in the back of his uncle's barbershop in Farmville, Virginia. If you gave Shorty an extra dollar, he'd thump out tunes with his rag as he polished your shoes, "The Star Spangled Banner" or "Amazing Grace." But Albert never enjoyed Shorty's unique rhythms until he was thirteen-years old; boys had to be teenagers before they were allowed to partake of the barbershop ambiance.

Wheeler Parker, a barbershop owner, has a cautionary tale to share, a hard lesson forced upon young men in his day, white men terrorizing in the middle of the night. Parker wants more for the younger generation after all the suffering, all the lost opportunities of his youth. He wants them to remember his cousin's name, Emmett Till. "He had a short life. Fourteen years. But if we remember, then it wasn't a wasted life."

Betty Reece was the only other woman besides Clara Poke and forty men in barber school. Betty was so painfully shy that one of her instructors said she was "so slow, she would miss the boat and the bus". Betty never did overcome her shyness and sat all day waiting for customers, lacking the effusiveness to gather regular clients. Sometimes she never had a single customer: "Felt like I was watching hair grow." She quit the business but still has her license and may go back to barbering one day.

Omar Rasul is a barber who enjoys the camaraderie of the shop, always up for a few laughs, which he considers good therapy. He favors "cut down" sessions, where "you target a person's flaw and roll with it. It's all about making people bust out laughing." On the other hand, the Reverend John C. McClurkin, a customer, likens the barbershop to the dinner table, a forum for family members to share stories and fellowship. The shop enjoys a similar dynamic, "except nobody's trying to hide their vegetables".

There are a few barbershop rules: "comments must both entertain and enlighten, proverbs need punch lines and comedy needs a dose of the profound". This thoughtful and humorous collection offers a peek into the rarified world of the black barbershop, still as popular today as when it first began. There's a sound you can hear above the clip and buzz of scissors and clippers: "It's the easy hum of men among men." Luan Gaines/2005.

The best for all pre-modern Greek except Hellenistic.

This is an excellent reference book! It has passed the test of heavy usage, and it has outlasted many academic fads.
Smyth does a thorough yet concise job on the known varieties of written Greek usage from the Homeric epics up to the beginning of the Hellenistic period .
Smyth does not cover Hellenistic (Koin�) Greek as much, especially not for texts that have Semitic or Egyptian "flavors:" the Septuagint, New Testament and Egyptian Greek papyri. For real grammars on those, look up these authors: Wallace, Dana, Mantey, Robertson, Blass, Debrunner, Funk, Conybeare, Stock and Zerwick.
Some writers in the centuries between the reigns of Augustus and Constantine, and the Byzantines afterward, tried to "return" to Classical Attic usage in writing, with mixed results. When reading them, use both Smyth and a Hellenistic/Koin� grammar together, carefully.

Warning about different editions

In this review I discuss two different editions of this book; Amazon will not allow me to separate my reviews by edition.

1. One of my students bought a paperback of this book (2010, Benediction Classics). There is a serious problem with it. This is a reprint of the _first_ edition of Smyth, copyright 1905. The _standard_ edition, and the one that every Greek commentary in the world will refer to, is a later edition (copyright 1920, revised by Gordon Messing in 1956). You might think that this would not matter, but it does: not only is the pagination different, but the reference numbers have all changed in the later, standard edition. So my poor student reads in his commentary that a concept is explained at Smyth paragraph 256, goes there and discovers that _his_ paragraph 256 has nothing to do with that grammatical problem.

My guess is that the publisher of this book found a copy of the first edition, realized that the copyright had run out, and slapped together a cheap reprint. It's not worth your $29. Buy the later edition from Harvard U. Press, and you'll be on the same page as the rest of the Greek-reading world.

2. On the NEW paperback by Martino Press (2014):

We seem to be in murky waters.
From what others have said, the Martino edition is an exact facsimile of the Harvard U. Press edition, first produced by H. W. Smyth, updated in 1956 by Gordon Messing. So in terms of quality, this book is what you want.

The question I have regards copyright. Harvard owns the copyright to Messing's updates of Smyth's 1920 edition - so how is it that Martino Press is publishing this book? My guess is that their lawyers have argued that Messing's updates were not significant enough to warrant new copyright, which puts the 1920 edition in the public domain. But in my HUP edition, Gordon Messing's Preface states: "Some changes have been made in the historical and comparative part of the work.... A very few changes, again bearing on historical linguistics, have been introduced in Part II.... In addition, lists of corrigenda have been supplied by several scholars, and /these have been silently inserted wherever possible/ (emphasis mine). Not one or two corrections, but "lists of corrigenda".

So this issue is simply this: when you buy the Martino Press edition, you are allowing this press to profit from the work that Gordon Messing did while under contract with Harvard University Press. Now, Harvard is a large institution with lots of money, and they don't depend on Smyth for their income. But for those of us who take the idea of intellectual property seriously - and I am one such - the Martino edition amounts to theft. It may not be illegal - I don't know the extent of Messing's "silent" corrections, and I'm not a lawyer. But it doesn't look ethical to me.

Amazon, needless to say, continues to do nothing to clarify the question of multiple editions, multiple copyrights, and multiple publishers. When you click to "look inside this book" you are shown images, not of the unethical Martino Press edition, but of the HUP edition - which holds a legal copyright on this work. I would suggest that that's the edition you should buy.

Smyth is the only grammar for ancient Greek worth buying (besides the advanced treatments of specialized topics like Goodwin on the moods and tenses and Denniston on the particles). Unlike Latin, where the field of grammars is much wider, Smyth is the only English grammar of ancient Greek comprehensive enough to warrant any attention from Hellenists. Goodwin and Gulick's volume is too sparse in comparison (but note they cover prosody and Smyth does not) while Kaegi's is a step below theirs in depth. Ideally all intermediate level Greek students will begin to use this text as a reference grammar. Very reasonably priced for the wealth of information it contains. The book itself is also durable and will endure years of constant thumbing.
