I received this book as an award from Goodreads. The book has excellent formatting plus great "thought questions" on C and C++. It's has great structure, leading you to the accurate answers. It'd be fun to use for someone learning C and C++ OR for someone who already knows knows them. In my mind, I'm even imagining a trivia game using the examples! Algodruid is expanding the Preface into an introduction with more , much more information as to who the book is intended for (who is the audience), and the contents of the book. He is also adding more to the HR section of interview questions. I suggested that , examples of actual answers would be great in this section, with critiques as to their utility in the interview (i.e. some "bad" and some "good" answers so that the person is able to learn to think through how to best present themselves for the job. All in all, a great book.

Too many typos for a book. I only read about 20 or 30 pages and already found 3 typos. The typesetting is poor. The content of the book is OK. Returned.

About the Author
"Few athletes have had lives as filled with variety as Earle E. Liederman. He began as a vaudeville strongman and in the mid-1920s became the undisputed king of the mail-order musclemen. After that he turned to radio broadcasting and then to journalism. Finally, in the 1940s Liederman came to California and, because of his seductive descriptions of sun, sand and sea, helped draw hundreds of bodybuilders to the West Coast. Despite his many accomplishments, the details of Liederman's biography are difficult to pin down because he was so reluctant to recount his personal life. Not even his birthdate is known for certain. Apparently, he was born around 1886 in Brooklyn, New York, to poor Swedish immigrant parents, graduated from high school in Jamaica, New York, and pursued a degree in physical education at the state normal school. Soon after earning his diploma, he was hired by the New York Board of Education as a physical culture specialist. ... While Liederman was working for the Board of Education, he was also trying his hand as a boxer. It took him only a short time to determine that he had little talent for the ring, however, so he switched to wrestling, which also proved not to be his strong suit. He was saved from further embarrassment in this effort by a talent scout from a vaudeville chain, who convinced the young man to try his hand at a strongman act. This was more to Earle's taste, and in 1910 he quit his job and embarked on a career as a professional athlete. Liederman was a savv marketer, and he knew how to tap into the public's worries and insecurities. The copy in one typical ad from 1924 compared a tiny body to a wart on the nose--but with one difference. "If you had a wart on your nose, you would worry yourself sick--you would pay most any price to get rid of it. . . . Wake up! Come to your senses! Everyone despises the weakling." Worrisome thoughts like these kept more and more customers clamoring for the course, and before long his ads were appearing in several magazines at once, often in lavish six-page spreads. Earle raked in a great deal of money with the mail-order business. One visitor to his posh New York headquarters reported that there were 60 secretaries ... pounding out advice and encouragement to the many correspondents. ... He kept a fleet of fancy cars and lived the high life. At some point he married a former Miss Alaska beauty queen, and the two cut a glamorous swath through New York society". - David Chapman

One of the top "Physical Culture" books ever written by the great Earle Liederman. This book combines history with great information as it was written about 90 years ago. The principles of training in this book still hold true today. A great read. Modern day "toner types" looking for the magic formula, look elsewhere. For those who appreciate the history of physical culture and the iron game and want to build real strength (without drugs) ... you will love this book.

Very thorough.

This is an interesting book which describes the Phoenician expansion into the Western Mediterranean from the eighth to sixth centuries B.C. The focus is the Iberian Phoenician settlements on either side of the Pillars of Hercules with Gadir (Cadiz) as the main attraction. As the written record of the Phoenicians themselves did not survive, this work relies primarily on archaeological information and the small body of sources written by the Phoenicians' neighboring cultures (the Greek Homer's epic poetry, the Jewish Old Testament, etc.).
There is much discussion about the social, political, and economic reasons for the Phoenician expansion westward. In addition, the form which this expansion took - from informal trade to outright colonization is explored. A large part of the book is devoted to the competing historical theories regarding this expansion in which the author is obviously well-grounded.
Who engaged in the trade and expansion- the palace, the temple, or independent merchants? How was it organized? What were the ships like? What were the commodities traded? How were Phoenician relations with the indigenous peoples handled? All these questions are answered.
There is obviously comparison between the original Phoenician settlements in the West and those of her daughter colony Carthage which succeeded them. The emphasis in this work is on the Phoenician period rather than the following Punic period of settlement. This is done to give the Phoenicians' initial accomplishments in the West due credit rather than have them overshadowed by Carthage.
With the book's emphasis on the Iberian peninsula, the Phoenician enclaves in the central Mediterranean such as on Malta, Sicily, and Sardinia do not get much attention. I would have enjoyed more comparison between the Phoenician settlements and the subsequent Greek colonies in the West as well.
An interesting read on a little-known but highly-influential ancient people. And don't forget to thank them for this alphabet while you're at it.

Very poor research....

The Phoenicians are fascinating people and deserve a good telling of their history. Unfortunately this is not it. After acknowledging significant errors in the first edition, the author simply added new evidence contradicting older parts of the book. For example, destruction by the Sea Peoples is said to have resulted in Tyre being 'founded' after 1200 BC. But later it is admitted that Tyre was not destroyed by the Sea Peoples, so the city existed before that date. Nevertheless, the earlier error is still used as the basis for claiming that the Phoenicians of Tyre made no westward expansion across the Mediterranean until a later time. Unfortunately this edition still contains many significant errors, but now with contradictions. Phoenicians (2000) by Markoe and other books are better sources.

An important work on Phoenicia!

Maria Eugenia Aubet is a Spanish Archeologist who has made a significant contribution to the history of the maritime trade and colonies of the Phoenicians. Phoenicia, now modern-day Lebanon, was the home of the Biblical Canaanites, who, because of contraction of their land from Israelite and other invasions, turned outward to the Mediterranean Sea for survival. In trading with so many diverse nations, the Phoenicians developed a 22-letter alphabet based on sound, the basis of our alphabet of today.

This book is scientific and well-presented. My only regret is that she could have spent more time on the development of the alphabet.

Pol Pot then. And Pol Pot today

Dictators never change. Know your history and other countries histories. Look around you now and see after you read this book if you don't see a pattern. Pol pot wiped out intellectuals. Then had the people turn on each other. All freedoms were removed. Then the killing fields. It all happened right under the worlds nose and they did nothing to stop it. Next you see or hear about UN intervention know that they have never NEVER stopped genocide and mass murder. Pol pot is a good example of someone left to kill his own people and get away with it.

CHRISTOPHER GEORGE LEWIN has been fascinated by war-games since a child. Aged ten, he devised one of his own, the intellectual challenge of strategic games being of interest. The author also specialises in British social history of the 17th century. Currently an advisor to the Government on risk in the public sector, Lewin has had numerous magazine articles printed as well as contributing towards Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Fighting wars in miniature

Ever since organized warfare began the leaders of armies have been faced with the problem of practicing tactics and strategy. Lewin's book looks at how the war game came about to fill this role and how war games evolved later on to entertain the public. Although the book discusses many war games which were not, strictly speaking, games reflecting warfare but rather games which used warfare as a motif, nevertheless the author has provided information on a number of serious games (such as Kriegspiel) and discusses the method of play and the role of chance, etc. Lewin's point about the more realistically a game reflects the truc nature of warfare the less popular it is due to its complexity is dead-on I think. Today, computers allow play with logistics, chance, relative unit strength and experience all factored in.

Well-illustrated with photographs of period games, this is definitely a valuable addition to any war library.

WAR GAMES AS BOARD GAMES

This a great book on the early history board game/war games with emphasis on the U.K. and Germany. Lots of great illustrations in color and fairly detailed descriptions of the game. Obviously by a collector the review peters out with the early sixties. A lot of fun to read and look at the pictures. Emphasis is on modern war but some Napoleonic and medevil are metioned.

Good for some purposes

Very helpful if you are looking for places to stay and to eat in major population areas.. Not so helpful regarding smaller towns or general information about the things to see and do.

Not their best effort

Disappointed. We are travelling in China for a month and have been using the Lonely Planet China for that trip. We are able to plan every facet of the trip with the book. Specifically - how to actually get places (the most important part of traveling if you ask me). Unfortunately for the second month of travel in SEA, this is not possible with the LP VCLNT copy we received just before we left home (too bad we left the old version at home expecting the updated version to be more useful). The book has good information about places to stay and eating (as well as tips like "be nice to locals" or "don't hurt the environment") but not as much information about how to get from point A to point B. So far I am constantly online trying to deduce the best route from Bangkok to Siem Reap to HCMC to Hanoi etc. In the China one it lays out on point transportation options for the common next destinations. This book does not do a very good job of laying out transport options between these countries - surprising as they encourage you to travel through each in the Plan Your Trip Section. Basically it says to fly. Where is the adventure in that?
Finally, I also don't understand the need to put reviews of five star hotels in these books. How difficult would it be to print two identical versions of the same book - one for normal travelers and one for those with no budget? Maybe take out the low end transportation tips for the latter as well. Lots of wasted print. Not their best effort.
Overall, I first used LP for a long trip through Asia 12 years ago and in my opinion the product (in this case) has devolved into too many feel good tips and high end options and not enough useful data. Get back to basics boys and girls.

This Book Will Keep You From Finding The Good Stuff

So I went on a long trip around SE Asia which included many countries in the area. I was thrilled when I found out that these books were on Kindle. I figured I could download the books instead of carrying a heavy book with the limited space in my pack, and I was going to need a lot of books. For starters, the Kindle books are worthless. Instead of having more information, because they don't have to use more paper, there is less information. In fact, so little that it looks like they put these books together in such a hurry just to get by so they could throw them out there. The formatting is outrageous. Even the worst Kindle books have clickable links so you don't have to scroll back and forth, back and forth, from the index. I asked Amazon for a refund and had them delete the worthless excuse for a publication.
Next, most all of the information in all the different countries' books I looked at in bookstores and from other travelers was way out of date, and these are new books. The worst problem is that there is so little information as to make these books a complete waste of owning. All the great places I stayed at, and everybody else easily found as well, are not in their books. Following Lonely Planet guides actually keeps you from finding all the best places to stay, because you are relying on out of date, poorly researched information. They will tell you things like this is the place all the backpackers go and is the best value, and it will be completely wrong. I went to one place they gave a great review in a new book, and it seemed like a filthy drug den with gangsters running it. The new owners of Lonely Planet have taken the good name of the Wheelers and their past accomplishments, and are milking it for all it's worth without putting in the work.
Here is what I suggest. Go to Google maps to look at the cities or places where you plan to go. Even the smallest places like Don Khon, or Thakhek, in Laos, or Cambodia, or wherever, will have hotels listed on Agoda, or Booking.com, or some other site, for example. Just Google the place name and hotels. You will also see other places listed on Google map which have links to reviews, with up to date listings and prices. You will also see where the concentrations of places to stay are in a town, that might not have a link, and then you simply go there and look around. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the way Lonely Planet was getting a lot it's limited information, because in everything I read, it seemed that they had never visited any of the limited places they cover, and when I say limited, I mean limited. How they can have the guts to print out new editions with less information than the previous ones is beyond me. My fifteen-year-old edition of India, for example, had more maps than the new book. Anyway, you don't need maps in a book anymore. Everything you need to know is up on the web and current and the smallest villages have internet access.
I would look at fellow traveler's books in disbelief. The people carrying them said they were almost useless. It was a common topic of conversation. Everyone said they would be no longer buying these. One guy joked about feeding it to the cows that commonly eat paper out of the trash in India. Seriously, they would be more useful with blank pages so you can write in your own info, or that from other travelers. Don't waste your money or be disrespected by these slackers, whom I wouldn't be surprised have never travelled farther than from their computers to the coffee machine.

I love this Turkish grammar book by Aslı G�ksel. It is better than her first Turkish grammar "Turkish: A Comprehensive Grammar" in that it is accessible to the beginning or intermediate student. The appendixes at the end of the book are really useful, especially the appendix on verb conjugation. I recommend it. I just wish the authors would publish it for Kindle or iBooks.

About the Author
Dr. Dale Arthur Fife is a gifted pastor, author, teacher, and

musician with an insatiable passion for intimacy with God.

His zeal for the Lord has led him on an incredible journey

from his first pastorate of a small rural church in a coal-mining

town outside of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to the cofounding

of a large multiracial inner-city church in Pittsburgh. After five

decades of experience in ministry, he and his wife, Eunice, now

provide apostolic leadership at SonPointe Church, a growing

congregation in Bradenton, Florida, and are the founders and

overseers of Mountain Top Ministries, a network of pastors,

leaders, and para-church ministries with local, regional, and

international impact. His wisdom, maturity, and genuine

spiritual concern for others have caused many to regard him as

a "spiritual father" in the Lord. His previous books include The

Secret Place and The Hidden Kingdom.
