About the Author
Randy Knight has taught introductory physics for 25 years at Ohio State University and California Polytechnic University, where he is currently Professor of Physics and Director of the Minor in Environmental Studies. Randy received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State, under the mentorship of Professor Leonard Jossem, that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to Five Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching and this book. Randy's research interests are in the field of lasers and spectroscopy. When he's not in the classroom or in front of a computer, you can find Randy hiking, sea kayaking, playing the piano, or spending time with his wife Sally and their seven cats.

Comprehensive and Well Explained

College Physics by Knight does a fantastic job of putting complicated physics concepts to elegant explanation and diagrams. The organization and consistency of throughout the book made learning predictable and thus easy to follow. The practice questions at the end of each chapter are of a wide range of difficulties, providing practice for all phases of learning.

Some of the practice questions assumed values that were mentioned in the associated chapter (ex. specific index of refraction for glass) but not in the problem itself, which made finding the solution more difficult. It would be helpful if all of the values required for solving the problem were given in the question, as on an exam.

Overall, this textbook has been greatly beneficial in my understanding of physics. I've had the unfortunate luck of getting some pretty terrible physics lecturers, I owe my success in physics to Knight!

I bought this book for my phys I class and although my teacher sucked balls this book was extremely helpful and unlike most text books it explains the topics fairly well giving relevant examples. plus the price was great for a new edition of the book. I recommend it.

Perfect alternative for the newer edition.

Good alternative if you need the newer version for your Physics lecture. This copy served me just fine with no issues at all so save money and get this instead! Since its Volume 2, it only covers Physics 2 so keep that in mind.

The results are normally disappointing because management schools and psychologists have limited insight and understanding of the technical dimensions in engineering work. Little if any of the material in this book can be obtained from management texts or courses. Management schools have avoided the technical dimension of workplace practices and that is precisely what characterises engineering practice. The technical dimension infuses almost every aspect of an engineer’s working day and cannot be avoided. That’s why this book is so necessary: there has not yet been any authoritative source or guidance to bridge the gap between inanimate technical issues and organisational behaviour. This book fills this gap in our knowledge, is based on rigorous research, and yet is written in a style which is accessible for a wide audience.

About the Author

Professor James Trevelyan is a Winthrop Professor in the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering School at The University of Western Australia. His main area of research is on engineering practice, and he teaches design, sustainability, engineering practice and project management.
He is well known internationally for pioneering research that resulted in sheep shearing robots (1975-1993).
He and his students produced the first industrial robot that can be remotely operated via the internet in 1994. The robot has been controlled by a conservatively estimated 500,000 people in dozens of countries.
He was presented with the 1993 Engelberger Science and Technology Award in Tokyo in recognition of his work, and has twice been presented with the Japan Industrial Robot Association award for best papers at ISIR conferences. These are the leading international awards for robotics research.
His teaching has also been well recognised: he was presented with the ASME Award for Mechanical and Mechatronics Teaching at the 2003 AAEE Conference in Melbourne. He has earned four distinguished teaching awards at UWA, and received a further best paper award at the 2004 International Conference on Engineering Education Research conference in the Czech Republic.
From 1996 till 2002 he researched landmine clearance methods and his web site is an internationally respected reference point for information on landmines. He was awarded with honorary membership of the Society of Counter Ordnance Technology in 2002 for his efforts, and was also elected a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
His most recent work is research on engineering practice that aims to understand how engineering work is actually performed, an aspect of engineering that has not been researched before. This work is helping to explain why engineering and process-oriented companies can typically lose 30% of their turnover from engineering, maintenance and operation mistakes. It also helps to explain why engineering services in the developed world seem to cost much more than they should, often much more than in industrialised countries, and is a significant factor inhibiting poverty reduction. Professor Trevelyan is working on education programs that could help overcome shortcomings in engineering training programmes in developing countries.

Insightful and practical

I haven't read this book in its entirety (few people ever will), but I've spent enough time with it to confidently endorse it.

The author describes what it means to be an expert practicing engineer, and provides wise guidance on how to reach and stay at that level during the course of an engineering career. Some of this guidance may appear counterintuitive to novice engineers, but it does resonate with my own thinking based on almost three decades of experience as a practicing engineer, and it's important to note that the book is largely based on extensive research by the author and his colleagues.

Regarding how to approach the book, don't be daunted by its 600+ pages in a smallish font. The book is structured such that you don't need to read it cover to cover, and it probably makes more sense anyway to dip into it here and there, according to your interests and needs. To most benefit from the book, rather than reading it once and then leaving it on the shelf, I suggest revisiting it over and over again through the course of years and perhaps decades ... so keep it handy!

About the Author

Karen Anderson received her BA and MA from the University of Regina, and she received her PhD in sociology from the University of Toronto in 1982. She taught at McMaster University in Hamilton and at King's College in London, Ontario, before coming to teach at York University in 1988, where she is currently an associate professor of sociology. Her research interests include nineteenth-century financial capital, gender relations in seventeenth-century Iroquoian societies, contemporary social theory, and theories and practices of post-secondary teaching. Most recently she has begun a research project on the flight of capital from manufacturing in a small Ontario town and its impact on people's lives. Between 2007 and 2010 she was a research fellow at York University's Centre for the Support of Teaching, where she conducted research on teaching large introductory university classes. She has authored two books, as well as numerous book chapters and journal articles.

He wants to be team manager, but he winds up competing under the name Eyeshield 21 to keep other teams from knowing his name and stealing him away. The three must recruit enough players to form a team of 11 in order to play their first game. The thin-line art style gives the players a certain delicate beauty, while exaggerated reactions put readers directly in touch with the characters' emotions. If you are looking for a sports manga series and love football, “Eyeshield 21″ vol. 1 is highly recommended!

In Japan, American football may not be too popular compared to the international futbol (soccer), but there are a few high schools that have football teams and the NFL does have a game played in Japan, helping to spread the game’s popularity.

But in 2002, writer Riichiro Inagaki and illustrator Yusuke Murata introduced American football to a broader audience through their manga “Eyeshield 21″ which has been featured on the very popular Weekly Shonen Jump, has led to several videogames and also a 145-episode anime series which lasted from 2o05-2008. And now for 35 volumes, “Eyeshield 21″ continues to entertain masses through its manga series currently available from Viz Media as part of their Shone Jump Advanced line.

“Eyeshield 21″ revolves around a young teenager named Sena Kobayakawa who has passed his entrance exams at his local high school, Deimon Private Senior High School. The school where his childhood friend Mamori Anezaki attends. Both Sena and Mamori are close because all throughout his life, Sena has been bullied and Mamori has been there to protect him.

Living his life as a gopher for other friends, Sena hasn’t had any true friends until he meets the devil-looking Yoichi Hiruma and the very huge Ryokan Kurita who try to get Sena to join their football team.

Of course, Sena doesn’t know how to play football but being the new kid at school, but still he gets bullied all the time by those who try to make him their gopher.

Fortunately, the huge Kurita ends up taking care of them. Out for revenge, the bullies start to pick on Sena once again but Sena is sick and tired of getting beaten up and when they go after him, he demonstrates a skill which he has had for a long time, speed. Because Sena has lived his life running away from bullies, he has improved his skills at running, cutting and doing all he can avoid the bullies. Immediately, Hiruma wants to utilize him on the Deimon High School Devil Bats football team.

Sena just wants to become a team manager but Hiruma wants Sena to be the team’s running back. And because Hiruma wants to make sure that no one can steal him for their high school or let alone another sport at school, he plans on a disguise that no one but he, Sena and Kurita will know and that is putting an eyeshield on a football helmet and giving Sena a #21 jersey, and going by the nickname “Eyeshield 21″.

For Hiruma and Kurita, their goal is to make it to the Christmas Bowl, where the two best high school teams compete against each other. But considering the fact that Deimon High have been terrible, with Eyeshield 21, can they beat their first opponent for the season…The Koigahama Cupids? And will they find enough players for this season?

From the soccer-driven series “Captain Tsubasa”, the basketball series “Slam Dunk”, the baseball series “Touch”, the tennis series “Tennis no Oujisama” (Prince of Tennis) and many of them have this underdog vs. the better team type of mentality.

Yes, there is a banality when it comes to sports manga series but there is often this side of supernatural element that an athlete has. A super kick, a special tennis serving or hitting ability and with “Eyeshield 21″, what makes the series so exciting is that every team has its special individuals with unique talents. But when it comes to the Deimon Devil Bats (the protagonist team), these guys are like a group of misfits put together in hopes to accomplishing their goal of making it to the Christmas Bowl. But they are surely talented. Sena (Eyeshield 21) has this special ability of his running and in this latest volume, he hones that talent and makes himself even better. We also see new characters pop up and joins the team and definitely see how everyone works together, faces adversity together as a team. But for Deimon High School, these bunch of misfits have pride and also have what it takes to surprise everyone they have come up against.

Similar to other sports anime in which there is an underdog getting involved with sports and displays a tremendous skill, “Eyeshield 21″ definitely showcases that into the storyline but with the characters, in this case the team is more like the “Bad News Bears” and with the “The Devil Bats”, the team consists of characters that are just wild and crazy. Actually, all teams have characters that are wild and crazy and I suppose that is what makes “Eyeshield 21″ so interesting and enjoyable.

But I also like the fact that Sena is somewhat of an inspiration to those who have been bullied. Instead of using his weakness as a crutch, he turns his speed to a a secret weapon for the Deimon High Devil Bats but most importantly, for a quiet guy with no friends, the camaraderie of his team is what he needs in his life and definitely gives him the confidence that he needs to play in sports but to be the best he can be on the field.

The story is well-written, the character designs are well-done and I like how there are extra pages of stories and character info. included with this manga!

If you are looking for a sports manga series and love football, “Eyeshield 21″ vol. 1 is highly recommended!

Amazing Series.

Eyeshield 21 is the only American football manga that I know of but it ends up surpassing sports to become an amazing manga.Though being a shonen makes it somewhat predictable, the characters are vividly shown with not one character being mere filler.Change is seen in all of the main characters which is a wonderful thing in manga because it makes them memorable and more human like.The art is fantastic with each moment of action being distinct.The story is a typical nerd becomes jock though Eyeshield 21 does it in a way in which such a typical change becomes something worth watching.
