Most companies talk about excellence, but what does excellence really mean? What specific attitudes and practices lead to excellence? Drawing on years of study and decades of experience, authors Harry Paul, John Britt, and Ed Jent have zeroed in on five core qualities of excellence. In this entertaining and enlightening book, they tell how to give and be your best in each of these five critical dimensions and foster excellence in your organization and in your life.
The book begins with a crime being committed: Excellence (personified) has been kidnapped, and Leadership assembles Excellence’s team (Passion, Flexibility, Communication, Competency, and Ownership) and challenges them to work together to get their Excellence back.
And who is the culprit? It is Average who has kidnapped Excellence and replaced Excellence’s team with his own: N. Different, N. Ept, N. Flexible, Miss Communication, and Poser. But a mysterious ransom note sparks a struggle between Average and Excellence.
Integrated into this tale of organizational excellence is the story of Dave, a delivery man. The kidnapping causes Dave to contemplate his own life and relationships in a way that makes the paths of personal and organizational excellence cross and intertwine. Who Kidnapped Excellence? is a parable that helps organizations and individuals achieve their best in every aspect of their lives.

An amazing story with a profound message!
By Ross Reck
Who Kidnapped Excellence does an incredible job of pointing out how subtly "Average" can creep into an organization and replace "Excellence" without the employees even realizing it. It also describes in detail the journey that must be undertaken in order to get Excellence back. The book breaks Excellence down into five dimensions: Passion, Competency, Flexibility, Communication and Ownership. Achieving Excellence requires that employees work consistently at the highest levels across all five dimensions. Anything less opens the door for Average to creep back in and nudge Excellence out. The last chapter in this book is especially exciting because presents the stories of a number of individuals and companies that consistently achieve Excellence. The book is a fantastic read with lots of "aha" moments and I recommend it to anyone who prefers to achieve Excellence rather than Average at work and in their personal life.

Storytime for Executives
By Mark S. Burgess
We connect to each other through stories - we tell about ourselves and our lives not by objective essay, but with gritty details, in digestible chunks of metaphor about how particular events unfolded for us. Tapping into that stream, Harry Paul and John Britt use the same channel to bring to life the abstract. Talk is everywhere about "excellence" but it's a disembodied, impersonal matter of course thing. But what if "Excellence" was someone you knew who went missing? The absence and the adventure to recover Excellence takes on a whole new immediacy. Paul and Britt don't just tell you a ghost story to scare you and leave it at that, they provide tools and ways of thinking that build on what you tapped through the story. For anyone responsible for how companies and employees interact - and, hey, isn't that everyone in a company? - this is a good book to help you touch something important.

An interesting book that focuses on five qualities of excellence and what you need to give and be your best.
By Blaine Greenfield
WHO KIDNAPPED EXCELLENCE? WHAT STOPS US FROM GIVING OUR BEST (Berrett-Koehler Publishers) by Harry Paul, John Britt and Ed Jent focuses on five qualities of excellence . . . and what you need to give and be your best in each of these five critical dimensions.
This is done via an engaging parable, in which a kidnapping is committed . . . a team is then established that needs to work together to get the victim back, as well as to determine who is the culprit. As this is taking place, a delivery man by the name of Dave is brought into the picture . . . consequently, he begins to contemplate his own life and relationships. There were many interesting passages throughout the book; among them:
* THE DOOLEY PHILSLOPHY: One should live one’s life seeing eery opportunity as new and exciting.
Passion went on to explains that her dog’s name was Dooley, and Dooley went out the same door several times a day to do his business and explore his backyard. “And if you could read Dooley’s body language,” she said, “And the way his eyes widen and his body trembles with anticipation, it’s like the first time he’s ever been out that door each and every time, and he can’t wait to get out there and explore.”
* THE LAW OF EXCELLENCE: Keep a constant aware and vigilance to always be your best with Passion, Competency, Flexibility, Communications and Ownership.
And my favorite one that told of the passing of Jack Paul, Harry’s father:
* Instead [at his funeral], I spoke about how Jack taught us that we all could make someone’s life a little brighter, and I shared with them story of how he made the coffee taste better. Afterward, many people came up to me, including his fellow employees, customers and caregivers who felt compelled to be there because Jack had much such a difference in their lives. Not only did he bring some joy to them, but he also gave them a fresh perspective on how precious life is and that we all that the ability and responsibility to make another person’s life a little brighter. For many months after Jack’s passing my mom continued to receive cards, letters and notes from customers telling her how much they had enjoyed seeing and spending time with my dad whenever he was working at Wawa.
The final two chapters in WHO KIDNAPPED EXCELLENCE? were my favorites . . . “Now Elevate Your Excellence!” presented many ideas that could immediately be put to use in virtually any organization . . . lastly, “People and Companies Who “Get It’ ” applied the book’s principles–as practiced by such companies as Baptist Hospital, Southwest Airlines and Galt House Hotel, among other.
