Betrayals: The Cainsville Series, by Kelley Armstrong

The exciting fourth novel in bestselling author Kelley Armstrong's "impossible-to-put-down" Cainsville series.

When Olivia's life exploded--after she found out she was not the adopted child of a privileged Chicago family but of a notorious pair of convicted serial killers--she found a refuge in the secluded but oddly welcoming town of Cainsville, Illinois. Working with Gabriel Walsh, a fiendishly successful criminal lawyer with links to the town, she discovered the truth about her parents' crimes in an investigation that also revealed the darker forces at work in the place that had offered her a haven. As if that wasn't enough, she also found out that she, Gabriel and her biker boyfriend Ricky were not caught in an ordinary sort of love triangle, but were hereditary actors in an ancient drama in which the elders of Cainsville and the mysterious Huntsmen who opposed them had a huge stake.
Now someone is killing street kids in the city, and the police have tied Ricky to the crimes. Setting out with Gabriel's help to clear Ricky's name, Olivia once again finds her own life at risk. Soon the three are tangled in a web of betrayals that threatens their uneasy equilibrium and is pushing them toward a hard choice: either they fulfill their destinies by trusting each other and staying true to their real bonds, or they succumb to the extraordinary forces trying to win an eternal war by tearing them apart.

Review
Praise for Kelley Armstrong's Cainsville series:

"Impossible-to-put-down. . . . Bring on the next Cainsville volume, please." —Sarah Weinman

"[Kelley Armstrong's] dispatches from this village filled with sinister secrets are going to be keeping her readers up well into the night." —Linwood Barclay

“Kelley Armstrong has paranormal elements in her classic mysteries but there are no ghouls, ghosts, werewolves or fairies and that’s why readers who loathe crossovers will love this series. [Deceptions is] smart, cleverly plotted and really well written and you don’t have to ignore the vampires to get to the good stuff.” —Margaret Cannon, The Globe and Mail

“Sometimes big, bad things really do come in small packages and no one is more adept at unwrapping them than she, making Deceptions a paranormal tale beautifully written and told.” —Providence Journal

“I am not a fan of mysteries that cross over into other genres, and I don’t like books that begin with infant narrators. So when I tell you that, despite that, Omens kept me reading on, you can bet it’s a good book. . . . A clever whodunit with some very nice twists and the fantasy actually works.” —Margaret Cannon, The Globe and Mail

“Armstrong creates heroines who are smart and strong, but with real weaknesses and vulnerabilities. They may be wrapped up in the supernatural, but they are realistic and relatable.” —Joanne Kelly, Winnipeg Free Press

“One of the best new series debuts this year! With its compelling characters and completely original set-up, Omens delivers a powerful combination of suspenseful thrills and supernatural chills. I can’t wait to read more!” —Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author of Touch & Go

“Like the creepy, spooky town of Cainsville, Kelley Armstrong’s Omens lured me in. I was busy, way too busy for this book, which, through a series of surprises and sleights of hand, had me conspiring for ways to get back to the gripping story, the colorfully bizarre cast of characters, and the clever, strong, smart heroine at its center. Don’t pick this book up if you have anything else to do. It will grab you by the collar and won’t let you up for air until it’s good and ready. And once you’re done, you won’t soon forget it.” —Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of In the Blood

Worth every second of lost sleep
By Michelle
From the second that Betrayals was delivered to my Kindle, I knew I had to settle in for a long night. As a longtime fan of Armstrong's, I was so excited to finally have this installment in my hands. Little teasers through her facebook page, and the preorder freebies (if you're not her fan on facebook, go sign up for her page now) only made the wait worse.

I was awake until 5 am, and can promise that it was well worth the lost sleep.

Betrayals finds our beloved trio still embroiled in the tug of war between the Cwn Annwn and Tylweth Teg. Since Deceptions, Olivia (Matilda) has been trying to avoid her fate and the impending choice that she must make between Ricky and Gabriel (Arawn and Gwynn). Betrayals picks up with Olivia in a place of avoidance; in trying to avoid her choice, she's also trying to avoid her relationship with Gabriel. However, when Ricky is accused of murdering a young woman that none of them knows, she has no choice but to refresh her connection with Gabriel, and thank god for that.

In Betrayals you will find murder, new myths, a little romance, sex, and humans (and fae) who make mistakes. You will also find Armstrong's characters growing and becoming stronger. Gabriel, in particular, was a highlight of Betrayals for me. He's one of my most-dear characters, and I thought this installment gave him tremendous opportunity for growth and character development as he does a lot of introspection and comes to some vital realizations.

Olivia, as per usual, holds her own. Her relationships with Ricky and Gabriel both progress in their own ways (which will lead some readers to rejoice and some to be furious) moving the story forward and setting us up for some amazing choices and action in the final book.

As Rose has noted before, Ricky is transforming from a lesser tarot card into the king that he was meant to be. Betrayals sees him taking more of an assertive role in discovering his own backstory and connections to the Cwn Annwn. Like Gabriel, he must also do some introspection and ultimately makes a choice that will directly shape the trio's future- and the future of the Cwn Annwn and Tylweth Teg.

I am already counting down the days until the final installment will be delivered. I knew that Armstrong would give us a fantastic story, and I was not disappointed. If you haven't started reading yet, get your copy so you can laugh, sigh, scream, and rejoice with the rest of us as we get ready for this awesome series to come to an end.

and simultaneously terrified that I would hate it. I mean
By Amazon Customer
I was both really excited to finally read this next installment of the Cainsville series, and simultaneously terrified that I would hate it. I mean, Armstrong's writing is always stellar, but this book had the clear potential to be infuriating. Love triangle! Fate! Reincarnation! All the stuff I hate.

In a froth of trepidation, I stayed up till 2 pm on release date to finish, and--and--it was so worth it. It could have gone so wrong, but it didn't. It was amazing. I thought after #3 that this book would be bogged down in more love triangle nonsense: Ricky is awesome and Gabriel does everything wrong even though he means well and Olivia misunderstands everything. And of course, with a title like this one, who wouldn't think of Gabriel and his unfortunate track record? Clearly he's going to prove that he's willing to risk his life for Olivia, and I was afraid it would be belabored and maudlin and awful. Nope. It flashes by almost unnoticed as he deals with one risk after another in a nightmare sequence, with classic Gabriel competence and endearing refusal to give in to emotion.

Similarly, I've never been fond of Ricky. He's too charming. It's unnatural, even without the added dislike that comes from watching Gabriel get misunderstood fifty thousand times. But this book redeems him. This book made me feel that, while nothing is going to stop me for rooting for the other team, I could at least understand what Olivia sees in him.

In general I felt that this book was great for character development. They all grew so much between the first book and this one. And there were some really lovely moments (and a couple of really painful ones). The plot was kinda weak--though I have to admit, a lot of the Cainsville plots strike me as kinda silly. This was not really a thriller mystery. But the character development, and interactions between the three main characters, were so strong that I didn't even care.

It was wonderful, and I'll read it again many times I'm sure. Can't wait for the next one!

Cainsville Part 3
By P Chez
This continuation of the saga furthers the story and cements the triangle between the three friends. This is not a standalone novel. You'll want to read the first books in order. In a way, this series of books is one great mystery published as a serial which gives the author plenty of time to make us care for each character.
I have no idea how the plot will end. This alone justifies three stars. Betrayals is perhaps the weakest novel in the series. There is a lot of explanation in the writing. The protagonist explains every detail of the plot to us so that we don't miss a beat. This isn't always a bad thing because the motives need explanation. It's all a bit far fetched and the writing doesn't let me get as lost in the story as I'd like.

I love Cainsville and its characters. I like the premise of the fae, the huntsman and his hounds, the mystery of how the love triangle may be resolved without dire tragedy. I certainly won't miss the next book, the conclusion of the story.
